Any Opinions on 'Em? Past Experiences You'd Like to Share? Ever Take One? What do You Think People Who Take Vows of Silence Learn or Don't Learn? Etc. It's all Good...
I hate being silent and lonely because my mind takes over hardcore. I get alot of complicated stuff figured out and great ideas but beyond that things can get pretty deep. Too much for me. So silence sucks, I think people provide better altogether.
i took a vow of silence last year for a day. it was hard but im doing it again real soon in school along with a few other kids
I take a vow of silence every year (last 2 years) on the LGBT National Day of Silence, this year on the April 13, 2005. The purpose of the Nationa Day of Silence is to publicly recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered students and their allies. If you want more information, check out the website behind the day of silence. http://www.dayofsilence.org/
Lived with some deaf folk for a little while and tried to walk in their shoes. Put industrial earplugs in and tried communicating without speech for a week. Kinda rough on the senses but I can relate a little better now.
I took a vow of silence for one year when i was 14 or 15 (but it only lasted a little over 5 months) I did so because, as i entered highschool, i felt that i would learn more from just observing and looking inward then i would from interracting. Now i see that, for me, the most 'educational' way to live is to have a balance between my internal and external worlds... (^^^ copied and pasted from my 'Strangest Experiences' Thread)
~shhhhh im talking - Well i;m glad you've come suck a long way... From really shy to having the name 'shhh im talking'... How 'bout that huh? *smile* Best of Luck with everything! ~Ankita - Don't enjoy being left to your own devices eh? Yeah, i can see how that could get overwhelming and all - Be thankful that you do have such an ability to think deeply though; who knows - maybe someday you'll be able to tune it so that it can work for you... ~KJ/TresBizzare - Wow - I never knew there was a day like that... Know i'll be joining you two next time it comes around... ~jesikhaviolet - Good question... I guess in a place where you can be alone to think about everything in some quiet not thinking about how you'd respond to external experiences. - Closed off. (By the way i spent a week in London a few weeks ago and loved it - Thinking about moving there later in my life if i can ever afford it) ~element7 - Sounds like an interesting experience. - When i was in elementary school we did this think where everyone in class would spend one full school day blindfolded to give them a little taste of what being blind would be like.
Just out of curiosity, do any of you know of any religions/cults/etc. that revolve around silence? - Like that's there whole deal; trying to establish absolute silence externally and possibly internally... Not interesting in joining myself, just wondering if there's a community of such folk out there...
yep, i participated in the vow of silence for the discrimination.. it was hard, because i love to talk, but i was glad i was giving up something i loved to do for others, you know?
