I was watching 'Easy Rider' last night (after coming back from the pub!) - and I found myself asking 'what happened to all the beautiful people?'. Sorry if I sound very ignorant - but I just wondered if hippy lifestyle had completely disappeared (particularly in the UK). What happened to the communes? Did they all simply fade away? I would love to know - and would be grateful for any information or links that would bring me up-to-date. Many thanks... beaty
the UK hippy community seems to be non-existent. we are being overtaken by chavs, or snydes, or townies, or whatever you want to call them, *sigh*
There is communes out there including the UK. I found a big list of them online a while ago. None in Ireland though....
The original hippie culture died down but it never died out. Some hung on to it, and while most communes disappeared a few survived and are still going strong today. As we progressed through the 70s the Vietnam War ended and Nixon resigned, so many in the movement felt the struggle was over. Then America entered an economic recession and people became less concerned with making the world a better place than with making a living, an attitude that continued after the recession ended. Lately there has been somewhat of a resurgence of the hippie culture in reaction to Bush's wars and economic policies. Hippies are a part of the counterculture, and counterculture is strongest when the culture is at its most objectionable.
