I know that 90% of weight loss pills are a crock unless precribed by a physician, and you could achieve weight loss simply by exercising and staying active.

    I looked it up.

It works as an amphetamine by supressing appetite.
I'd stay away because you could develop a dependency. I think a doctor would only prescribe this if you REALLY needed it.

Then they are taking off of the market for causing harm, or worse, fatalities like most prescription medication.

    Hey Capricorn,
Do you remember Phen-Phen?Well phentermine is one half of that drug combination. If I remember correctly,it was the combination of the two drugs that caused cardiac problems. But they still prescribe phentermine, and I took that drug,I had desperately tried to lose weight and went to a weightloss clinic. That was when phen-phen was considered "safe".Well it turns out that the reason I was not losing weight was that my thyroid gland was not producing thyroxine:that's what regulates you're metabolism...so they referred me to my doc,and told me to come back in a year when my thyroid meds were the right dosage. In the mean time phen-phen was taken off the market.I did lose weight w/meds for thyroid, but not enough. So I went back, and they put me on a low carb diet (not atkins)and for the first month I lost 30 lbs,the second month I took phentermine and lost 28 lbs.I did not get "addicted",but it's just like taking speed,it is a classified drug, and I now have serious cardiac issues....was it the phentermine?I also had rheumatic fever as a child which could have caused my problems,I would not reccomend taking it.The diet I was on was closely monitored by a doc,and I had to strictly adhere to the diet to lose...if I did'nt eat what was required,I would'nt lose. That meant I could not "skip" any food.I also exercised regularly, took vitamins and drank 72 oz.water per day.Long story ,wow!At any rate I am 46 years old and I have congestive heart failure with 3 leaky valves, enlarged heart, thinning of the chamber walls and afew other issues thrown in for good measure.I take 9 pills a day,and am way too young to have this condition,it shouldnt of happened, people in their late 60's and 70's get this! Not people my age.So I hope that you make an informed decision about using this drug.Whenever a doc gives me a pill and says here, take this you can be sure I check out the drug,Doctors are not God,and they need to make sure patients know the side effects and contraindications. If they don't then be an active participant in you're health care!!!I did'nt mean to carry on so,but I figure if I can make a difference in someones life, then it was'nt all in vain....Namaste and shalom, audreyanne

I was placed on Phen Phen by my doctor as well and suffered from a leaky heart valve. Thankfully, the condition was minor. I am appalled to hear that doctors are still prescribing this medication to patients after a lawsuit was filed against the drug company that produced it. I am very sorry to hear the damage it has done to your body, Audreyanna. God Bless.

Phen-fen caused problems in a relatively small amount of individuals because of the drug interaction (phentermine with fenfluramine). Fenfluramine has been taken off the market. Phentermine, by itself, is fairly safe, and very rarely leads to dependency, much less addiction. If you are taking any other drug that increases serotonin (antidepressants, decongestants, migraine drugs, and many others) you are at a similar risk of experiencing a drug interaction like the one that occurs with Phen-fen. It can cause serotonin syndrome, which can sometimes lead to heart valve and other problems.

If you are otherwise healthy (no heart rythym problems, high blood pressure, lung disorder, glaucoma, prostate enlargement, etc), and not on any other serotinin drugs, it is a good option for you. It is a great appetite suppresant. It is not for long term treatment, though, just a few months.
