I've been playing guitar for well over 6 years now, and although i love playing it to death, i feel like i want to expand my musical background. I know how to play piano a little, but besides that i have no other instruments. I would like to stick to string instruments. i was thinking about a viola or a cello...but im not quite sure. Anyone have any suggestions?
Man... Guitar is one of many instruments I play. I believe bass can help with rhythm and further your guitar playing. As do drums. I play bass, drums, other percussion like Djembe, Bongos, Conga. I also like getting into bluegrass and such, so I learned Mandolin, Dulcimer, and Banjo stuff in my spare time while at a music shop. I started on piano and organ... then in school, got into trombone. I really couldn't stand the director, though. Hah, to this day, I still don't even bother reading music. I learned harmonica because it can add a packing punch played with most instruments. I learned slide guitar when I started getting into Zydeco.
i was thinking about a bass, but i have played other peoples bass many times in the past, and i just dont get much of a kick out of it. I was thinking down the road i will really want a bass, but for now i want something different. As for drums, i would love drums, but unfortunatly i dont have the money or room for them. Im just gonna have to stick to my bongos and tamboriune for percussion for the time being :/
jeez george. brag brag brag. AHhahahhaa you know i love you anyways pieface PAULY! play fiddle. its too cool for skool. and you'll be out of school soon just dont play any sitar or something.. thats for weirdo's. ahha. i should talk.
i really do want a sitar! but they seem really expensive to...im really cheap at the moment :/ . Someday though...someday... hmm, i could get a wash board, and i already have plenty of spoons! then i could add in drums, buckets, i could make the cheapest precussion set up ever
Hm, I was going to suggest a modular synthesizer, but based on the above post that's not going to happen if you're looking for something inexpensive... How about a glockenspiel? You could probably find a decent used set of orchestra bells for less than $100 if you look around...
Musicians friend has cheap learner's Mandolin starter kits and banjo kits for $100 or under. Just something to learn on and mess around with.
I would suggest going for a wind instrument - clarinet is a good one (although it overblows a 12th instead of an octave), I was actually a flautist before I started guitar and flutes a brilliant instrumental, it's great for doing jazzy/Led Zeppelin bits in your pieces. Or you go the whole nine soloist yards and get yourself a sax. Seriously with strings once you can play one you won't pick up all that much extra skill by playing another (granted you will pick up quite a bit but essencially it's a deal of "you can play one you can play 'em all"), you go for something on completely the other end of the musical spectrum then what you will learn there will affect your playing of guitar in some really interesting ways. Blessings Sebbi
well, i want to learn keyboard/piano, saxophone, the technique of like double bass/cello, and hone my guitar, and my limited abilities to play harmonica and recorder and banjo and such. so id say saxophone if you cant already! id advise against glockenspiel though. ive got one and i used to play it. if you want somthing like that, id say go for a xylophone, or even better, a vibraphone. vibraphones are totally awesome if you learn to play them right. but the glock has like no practical purpose and is not very nice to microphones.
