I might get chewed out for this, but I just don't "admire" soldiers. Everyone says "support the troops", but I don't know how much I do. I mean, I want them home (my cousin is over there), but we have a voluntary army and I just don't understand what would make someone want to join it. Even in a time of peace, why join? Basically you're saying you will fight in a war no matter what it is about. Is it just manly to join or what? I guess I don't think nationally, I think globally, so dying for your country just seems silly to me.

people join for many different reasons. a person with a military family might be more inclined to join. people see it as a way to get out of poverty. people join so they can travel. people join for money for college. people join so they can protect this country. people join because they are forced to join. people join because they genuinely want to kick all the scum off of the earth. there are so many more reasons why they join. no one person joins the military for the same exact reason another person joins, imo.

I have to disagree wholeheartedly with what you wrote. It's the government and the power-elite running the government which angers me, not the soldiers. You can't blame people for the large-scale brainwashing that has occured via the mainstream media, which is responsible for the way many Americans think about political issues. I have to have some respect for the soldiers, simply because they're doing something I could never do. Most of these people don't have sinister intentions, either, unlike the government. Many of these people are duped into believing what they're doing is for the better of their country and the world. And many soldiers do disagree with the government, but are doing it as a means to simply survive and/or obtain a college education that they would normally not be able to afford themselves.

Please, don't hate the troops. If anything, hate the government.

Hating the government is hating the soldiers: seeing as the soldiers wouldn't fight for the government if they did not believe it, or weren't as vain.

i really don't get why someone would enlist, then go onto college. in the short term that might work. but in the long term, going into an ROTC program, getting commisioned as a 2nd Lt. is much better long term. if you want to enlist, join the Nat'l Guard, go to a ROTC program and the army will pay for most of the education as long as you get good grades and stay fit. you will train at boot camp, train on the weekends and still learn at college. then you get commishioned as a 2nd Lt. and make way more money than you would have as only an enlisted soldier. plus you still get money to go get more education. and the only way to move up rank as an officer is to coninue to get an education. and the higher rank you get, the more money you get.

thats my problem with peopel enlisting and then goign on to college after 4 years.

Never said I "hated" them for God's sake. I just don't understand their mindset. Many joined in a time of peace, but now they have to fight because dubya started a war. They are at the mercy of the president (and others) and this is one thing I don't respect, they took the chance of fighting a war they don't "believe" in. They agree to kill innocent people regardless of the reasoning. I have respect for soldiers who are drafted, they have no choice, but those who choose, no. My cousin told me many stories about the abuse of animals etc. that goes on in training too. They shoot them for fun.

Well fuck that. If everyone who is drafted refused to go, there would be a revolution, as opposed to a sucesful draft where the minority of resisters get thrown in jail.

If we are lucky they will try and draft us tommorrow so we can bend over and show them our ass holes, and say things like"this is what you smell like up front!"

    Oh spare me, huh?

I agree with Metro, people who enlist aren't really all that heroic, the people who were drafted and survived are survivors.

Come on, can we be honest here? A lot of people say they support the troops not because they do but because they're afraid of being scrutinized as un-american. Come on now. Even I said that I supported them.

Call me Un-American all you want, but I don't support the troops. Uh-oh! It's true. Fuck anyone who hates me for saying it. Enlisting on your own free will doesn't make you a hero. You volunteered for the service so you're fighting a war, what did you expect?

That could all be hearsay for all I know. This is the first I've heard of such a thing, and I am pretty informed for the most part.

I am not going to spare you, fool. There is no difference between enlisting and being drafted, because either way your being controlled by someone that's not you.

he was telling me about his training. We got on the topic of animal rights and he said "well, you wouldn't like the army then" and told of how they shoot at dogs and wild animals and laugh. Yeah, I'm not saying the army "allowed' it or encouraged it, it could just be his section or whatever. Still, it maks me sick and seems typical of the type of person who would be a voluntary soldier.

Terminal- that's just how I feel, I'm sick of holding it in.

yeah it makes sense, and it actually supports what I'm saying. These are people who can't think for themselves apparently. I'm just saying I don't respect them, I'm not going to roll out the red carpet for them.

    Hmm-nah. Being an animal lover I couldn't.

Besides, it's wrong to shoot animals, regardless of how dumb they are. Which is why I won't shoot you.
