How to make hula hoops.....

The poly tubing used for irrigation is perfect for making hula hoops. The 1" diameter pipe works the best for me. just go to Home Depot or Lowe's-type retailers and ask em where the "1" irragation pipe is.

Other supplies:

• PVC cutter
  
  
• Insert-connectors (1" connectors for 1" tubing )
• Colorful tape (to decorate)
• hairdryer (to soften the tube ends)

Choose your hoop size - and cut (you could just make a loop that stands somewhere between navel and shoulder height.) You could use a hacksaw or a sturdy blade if you have no PVC cutter.

The two ends will be connected with an inserted connector. The tubing ends must be warmed to make them pliable enough to accept the connector. A few minutes of hairdryer heat or soaking the ends in hot water.

Quickly grab a connector, and push the two tube ends together over the connector. If it doesn't go in, you need to heat it up more. The connector should disappear entirely within the tubing. As the tubing cools, it will contract around the connector for a strong seal.

Now comes the fun part: Decorating!

I usually tape the whole thing one color and then tape stripes on it.

That's neat! I would add some little rocks before putting the ends together and you have a nice noise, too.

if you want a quality hoop that will last you for years, these hoops are for dancing and doing tricks................... they are also quite a bit bigger than the little kids hoops you buy at wal-mart for $2... you can also add water to make them weighted which makes them good for working out................ if you have been to a festival and have wonderd where the hoopin girls get those big black hoops.......... this is how they make them! and you can even sell them at a festival for $20 each if you get good at making them.................................

they are pretty bulky to carry around but they are nice you can make them collapsable but i am not skilled at that so i dont try HAHA

man, at berkfest a boy gave me a homemade hula hoop, but i had so much other stuff to carry and it was so bulky I ended up passin it on too.... wish I hadn't now darnit... But I'll get around to makin or buyin one sometime.....

This first one is my one twin, he was a hoopin fool last summer. We moved from TX and made 10 of our own after going into hula hoop withdrawal ! See, in Houston, there were plenty of hoops to use at the concerts and fests. In PA, we became the hoop providers. Made them just like FunkyPhresh said, but heated with a flame.....boiling water or hair dryer makes so much more sense!!

We put marbles in some, thought of water , but didnt try it. Every outdoor show or fest we went to last summer, you could seee us attracting everyoine from 2-yr olds to grammas, had everyone hoopin!

first, ramblin'rose- your pics dont werk.. the web addy must not be typed in right now or something ....

second, so which do you guys recommend for a newbie, 1 inch tubing or 1 1/2 or 1 3/4????

third, at schwagstock, i borrowed this girls hoop for a few minutes, just trying it out, and it was real light... but it was just like the ones you mamas are describing.. are the ones you guys make light? or heavy? or what? (without any water or rocks i mean)

with all business sometimes you make a profit and sometimes you don't but they are definately fun to make, i think one roll of tubing will make about 8 hoops and 8 muliplyed by $20 is a good amount of money if you can sell all 8 of them...................

In the meantime, I will try to answer , I think the thicker, the better, for me anyway, and the heavier the better, I have one that I put a piece of garden hose inside, my favorite. When it is heavy, it just kinda goes goes with the syntripical (I know I spelled that wrong!) force. The pic is of my 7 yr old boy with a broken arm, hoopin 2 at once, and they arent no little walmart hoops!

wow! that is a great idea. my hoop (only a kiddie hoop) got bent. i'm definitly going to give that a try! a bit off topic....i can get the hoop to go from my hand down to my waist but am having some serious issues trying to get it back up again. any hints?

 

knitting, i havent masterd that LOL i can do it but cant get it back up there either LOL

 

I just went out and bought my first hula hoop in twenty years! To be honest, I didn't understand the love of hula hoops until Saturday night. My friend Jayme hula hooped all night on the dance floor, and it looked like so much fun! Now I understand the hula love. My daughter is outside right now, practising with her hoop. Any tips for beginners?
