OK, kids, I need some advice on tie-dying. Last year it turned out quite badly, by badly I mean trying to dye sheets and having them fade wayyyy too much the first time I washed them. Not to mention lookin like a smurf with blue hands because my friend is very allergic to latex. What brands of dye do you suggest? Methods? Other useful stuff? Thankies!
you have to make sure you use some salts or something...to stop the dye running everywhere!!! but i need advice on it too
DarkLunacy or DeepTurquoise, What your looking for is Soda Ash. Mix a handful in a tub of water and put what you want to dye into the tub. Let the materials sit for at least twenty minutes before dying. If you have a large object in the tub then turn it over after ten minutes to be sure that the soda ash soaks into all of the fabric. Without soda ash the dyes won't grab onto the fabric. Hope this helps. Moonbeam7
It also depends greatly on the dye you use. We use Procion MX dyes. They generally cost 4 bucks a bottle, and it's a powdered cold-water reactive dye. If you want bright colors, do not use RIT dyes. Everytime we used them we were disappointed. As long as you use the soda ash with the cold water dyes, you should get great results. Plus the MX dyes are MUCH easier to clean up. I'd recommend checking an arts supply store for the dyes. Also, we usually add urea to the dyes, which can also be found where the MX dyes are sold. If there's a Dick Blick art store in your area you can find everything there.
You use the dye that comes as a powder and dissolves into liquid, i find that that is the best to use, and as for the salt, your meant to use 30g. Also when it comes to elastic bands, dont use the thin ones, get some of the thick ones, there the best
wouldn't they look SO awesome? though i don't know how the red and blue already on the flag would turn out.. but still
Well with the red and blue, if another color got in them, it would be a darker shade, but wouldn't it be so nice?
