astrology, aka commodity fetishism in its purest form. It may even have grown legs! what is commodity fetishism? The concept of price. What is it? Exchange value is determined by the labour content of a commodity. A commodity then has a price which few perceive is actually a reflection of the relation between worker and producer. PRICE IS NOT INHERENT WITHIN A USE VALUE. In the process of alienating a person from their labour, a mystical price is acquired which appears as a truly mystical aspect within and related between commodities. People will buy things for reasons alone that it has a cost. Look at the pop industry and you will see that a bunch of simply rearranged chords will sell for no other reason than it has a price. It is expensive therefore it has some mystical value. This is useful to capitalists because they constantly overproduce so these worthless commodities, produced simply to be bought, prop up a failing system. So what? I challenge that astrology and the industry which has grown around it is a direct, pure expression of this fetishism. It is nonsense yet, like a bunch of chords strung together, it consists of two crudely glued together sciences including astronomy. It uses several psychological devices. It offers what seems like common sense advice. "but it offers so much and demands so little" is the sum thought it tempts from you. Such a thought, that there is nothing to lose, is a great recession for the human mind. Astrology is there only so you buy it. It has taken on a cult status of its own. It has grown legs if you will. The cost of astrology is two-fold: >It provides, as with all fetishes, an escape for capitalism to create more crap >It demands that your brain should take a step back to a state in which you are incapable of resistance. It makes you subliminally open.
