i reccently found out about the bone char in sugar (shudder) and read that its usually safe to use granualted sugar because it comes from beets not sugar cane. I'm still a bit confused though and was wondering if anyone could help clarify? Can i use any sugar that says "granulated" on it or does it have to be more specific than that? thank you very much :)

actually sadly i don't believe thats true because brown sugar is white sugar with the molasses added (darn..) raw sugar is the safest i suppose but i know their are others out there

There is a brand called "Billingtons", that says it is suitable for vegetarians. Im in NZ and saw it on the supermarket shelves,- a nice suprise since we don't usually have much vegetarian stuff. I think it is sold as a high end snooty sugar- not as a vegetarian one(but it has "suitable for vegetarians" on its back label). The type i got is raw sugar,i'm not 100% sure if the also make vegetarian processed sugars, i think they do. ..I'd say unless it has labelled it is OK for vegetarians then assume it is not.
edit: Billingtons is made in UK

Clawsy, all Australian sugar is vegan, and you (NZ) import quite a bit from us.

you will have no problem with the organic sugar and you feel really good about helping the organic food farmers. yes, stay away from mainstreem sugar, in the processing they use bone.

In addition, Domino assured me that their organic sugar is not processed with bone char and the Imperial Sugar Company told me that they do use bone char.
