I think today Australia officially became the 51st state of the USA. It's all sad and whatever that Ronald Reagan died..... but who the fuck was he??? Seriously, i have no idea about anything he did during his term in office, when he was president or even what party he was with. and i only just today discovered that he was some B grade actor. What relevance does his death have to us down here?? Last night his funeral was shown on two channels, live. and again it was repeated today. During one of the news updates the chick kept referring to him as "president Reagan". not "US president", just "president"..... he was NOT OUR PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!! Why do we have to suck so fucking hard on bush's dick in some desperate attempt for him to like us??? we don't show the funeral of any other world leader live on two channels!!! Not even the queen mother got that kind of privilege! I'm worried now that some little kids who dont know any better are gonna be watching this saturday afternoon program and take in all this mind controlling information and be tricked into thinking that our nation belongs to the american government. Maybe i'm just pms-ing.... but this is so frustrating!!! Not..... happy...... Jan. rant over.
Well, he was a world leader. Americans had to sit through weeks on end of stuff about princess diana dying. IMO, ronald reagan was FAR more important to the world and world affairs than princess diana. Oh, as for who he is, he's probably the biggest reason the USSR fell, or atleast hastened the inevitable. Though i am surprised that they are showing it down there.
it was inevitable that the USSR was going to fall...though i think he did hasten it drastically. Anyways, the best thing he did for the US was help bring back pride in being an american, we had some shitty years from 1975-1980 with vietnam and iran.
It's pretty ironic that there was so much stuff in the media about Diana's death.... considering that it was the media who killed her!! But i wouldn't have guessed that any american would have even heard of her.... so i'm impressed!
of course we've heard of her british royal stories entertain us all the time....my personal favorite was the british politician who went chasing after prince william on some dirt road because william cut him off and got pulled off the road by his security guards.... but yeah, we had nonstop diana for like months after her death. I dont understand what was the big deal with her. Just another rich person thinking they can 'bond' with people in 3rd world countries by visitng them and doing a few photo shoots and then retiring to their mansion and private jets.
yes, the "caring celebrity" cliche does shit me. but i'll give her a little credit because she at least kept it up even after they divorced. hehe... i never even heard that prince william story! Harry's always good for a laugh tho....
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/gloucestershire/2991388.stm i must ask though, whats with the fascination that people have towards the queen? Canadians get all defensive over her. I mean i guess technically she's "your queen," but i would think that'd be something you'd want to get rid of. Is it just tradition?
yeah and lets not forget all the fun he had in Nicaragua World leader? yeah sure, if you believe the world is america to be honest I'm pretty sick of all the stuff on Ronald Reagon too (though I did see the australian broadcast on Prime (aussie owned!) and whoarh you really would think you were part of the U.S. !! It was unbelievable. We haven't had it nearly so bad. I bet their wouldn't be so much crap, if John Howard himslef keeled over, and had his last breath.... (yeah I know happy thoughts, happy thoughts )
it is tradition... as far as i know she doesn't have much of a political role. the royal family is really just the left overs from the days of nobility vs peasants. we never really had upper/lower classes in australia, so the royals really aren't that relevant to anything we do here... we get a nice little pre-recorded message at christmas and that's about it. In fact, most Australians want to become a republic, however little johnny's on the ball about making sure that won't happen any time soon. dont see why he should worry tho... as soon as we get rid of the queen we'll just ditch an anchor to california and pull ourselves up nice and close.
I meant a world leader......margaret thatcher would have been another...gorbachov another... Anywys, no offense to the australians. But Reagan has had far more impact on history than John Howard has. Anyways, yes, like most american Presidents, Reagan has a definite blackspot with the iran-contra shit. My only guess is that Rupert(Sp) Murdoch owns some cable companies in australia too and thats why its plastered everywhere. If not, no clue why your cable companies care.
yeah, normally its an american joke against canada, but it seems it has become a world wide thing to call anyone that seems to be friendly with the US
The queen has a role as head of the army -- to prevent party-political politicians from commanding the armed forces which leads to instability (modern example -- Fiji). So if the Queen is ousted we would have to get a President. And personally, I would take the Queen. presidents almost always end up becoming party political and starting wars. Monarchs/Governers general tend to do nothing at all just like they are meant to. (If you doubt she is actually head of the army, ask a soldier, they take it very seriously).
i believe he is a dual citizen of both the US and Australia. We have laws that only US citizens can own US television organization. Not sure if he had to dump his australian citizenship post 9/11 though.
well even before 9-11 it was the general US policy to not allow dual citizenship of any kind. countries in the commonwealth such as NZ, Aussie, South africa, etc... can have dual citizenship though. since we are all part of the same group. but the US has never let it, although i don't doubt they have made exceptions (of course they have LOL) Doug
you're right, however, the US never forced anyone to give up their other citizenship as a requirement. I knew a bunch of people with dual canadian/american citizenship pre 9/11(not sure of their status now)..... Officially you are "only" a US citizen, but since you arent required to renounce your other citizenship, you're effectively a dual citizen.
