Files formatted as AVI don't display video on my computer. I have XP and they don't work on Windows Media or Winamp 5 for me. What's up with that?

I have tried several of various sizes and I get no error messages. Some don't play at all but most play only sound. It only happens with AVIs

that's what I was thinking but I wanted to hear some other peoples opinions, you would think that XP would come with that. It has so many codecs, I wonder why not AVI.

I was having the same problem playing back BitTorrent files (audio OK, no video) until I installed the DivX codec....

The best codec Ive found so far is FFDSHOW. That together with the AC3 filter (not AC3 codec) should be enough to handle most of your AVI file playback needs.

I also suggest that you use the BS Player rather than WinMediaPlayer. Those combined have served me well for some time now.

You have two ways of doing this. First either uninstall all codec packs that you have previously installed, and then download one codec pack. I recommend the k-lite codec pack. Or you can just download VLC Media Player (videolan) http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ which will play almost any video file without having to install any codec packs. If I were you I would just download VLC. Very rarely have I come across a video that it wouldn't play.

DivX solved all the problems I was having. I'm also talking about BURNind DVD's. All my avi's are DOWNLOADED. Or Ripped.
