Sorry about the size of this, but its so important I think it needs to be shared (came off an email). ASPARTAME ALERT! In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick. She had stomach spasms and she was having a hard time getting around. Walking was a major chore. It took everything she had just to get out of bed, she was in so much pain. By March 2002, she had undergone several tissue and muscle biopsies and was on 24 various prescription medications. The doctors could not determine what was wrong with her. She was in so much pain, and so sick... she knew she was dying. She put her house, bank accounts, life insurance etc. in her oldest daughters name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care of. She also wanted her last hooray, so she planned a trip to FL (basically in a wheelchair) for March 22nd. On March 19th I called her to ask how her most recent tests went, and she said they didn't find anything on the test, but they believe she had MS. I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if she drank diet pop(soda)? She told me that she did. As a matter of fact, she was getting ready to crack one open that moment....I told her not to open it, and to stop drinking the diet pop!!! I e-mailed her the article my friend had sent. My sister called me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and told me she had stopped drinking the diet pop AND she could walk!!!! The muscle spasms went away. She said she didn't feel 100% but she sure felt a lot better. She told me she was going to her doctor with this article and would call me when she got home. Well, she called me, and said her doctor was amazed! He is going to call all of his MS patients to find out if they consumed artificial sweeteners of any kind....In a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the Aspartame in the diet soda...and literally dying a slow and miserable death. When she got to FL March 22nd, all she had to take was one pill, and that was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning! She is well on her way to a complete recovery.....and she is walking!!! No wheelchair!!! This article saved her life: If it says "SUGAR FREE," on the label, DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!! I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on "ASPARTAME" marketed as 'NutraSweet', 'Equal', and 'Spoonful'. In the keynote address by the EPA, it was announced that in the United States in 2001 there is an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus. It was difficult to determine exactly what toxin was causing this to be rampant. I stood up and said that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject. I will explain why Aspartame is so dangerous: When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to Ê-formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants. The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus. Many people were being diagnosed in error. Although multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence...methanol toxicity is! Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. The victim usually does not know that the Aspartame is the culprit. He or she continues its use; aggravating the lupus to such a degree that it may become a life-threatening condition. We have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptomatic, once taken off diet sodas. In cases of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, (when in reality, the disease is methanol toxicity), most of the symptoms disappear. We've seen many cases where vision loss returned and hearing loss improved markedly. This also applies to cases of tinnitus and fibromyalgia. During a lecture I said "If you are using ASPARTAME (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc.) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss...you probably have ASPARTAME poisoning!" People were jumping up during the lecture saying, "I have some of these symptoms. Is it reversible?" Yes! Yes! Yes! STOP drinking diet sodas and be alert for Aspartame on food labels!!! Many products are fortified with it!!! This is a serious problem. Dr. Espisto (one of my speakers) remarked that so many people seem to be symptomatic for MS. and during his recent visit to a hospice, a nurse stated that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence! Diet soda is NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered, multiple SODIUM (salt) and ASPARTAME containing product that actually makes you crave carbohydrates. It is far more likely to make you GAIN weight! These products also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs. Formaldehyde is an absolute toxin and is used primarily to preserve "tissue specimens". Many products we use every day contain this chemical but we SHOULD NOT store it IN our body!!! Dr. H.J.Roberts stated in his lectures that once free of the "diet products"; and with no significant increase in exercise; his patients lost an average of 19 pounds over a trial period. Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics. We found that some physicians, who believed that they had a patient with retinopathy, in fact had symptoms caused by Aspartame. The Aspartame drives the blood sugar out of control. Thus diabetics may suffer acute memory loss due to the fact that aspartic acid and phenylalanine are NEUROTOXIC when taken without the other amino acids necessary for a good balance. Treating diabetes is all about BALANCE. Especially with diabetics, the Aspartame passes the blood/brain barrier and it then deteriorates the neurons of the brain; causing various levels of brain damage, seizures, depression, manic depression, panic attacks, uncontrollable anger and rage. Consumption of Aspartame causes these same symptoms in non-diabetics, as well. Documentation and observation also reveal that thousands of children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD have had complete turnarounds in their behavior when these chemicals have been removed from their diet. So called "behavior modification prescription drugs" (Ritalin and others) are no longer needed. Truth be told, they were never NEEDED in the first place! Most of these children were being "poisoned" on a daily basis with the very foods that were "better for them than sugar". It is also suspected that the Aspartame in thousands of pallets of diet Coke and diet Pepsi consumed by men and women fighting in the Gulf War, may be partially to blame for the well-known Gulf War Syndrome. Dr. Roberts warns that it can cause birth defects, i.e. mental retardation, if taken at the time of conception and during early pregnancy. Children are especially at risk for neurological disorders and should NEVER be given artificial sweeteners. There are many different case histories to relate of children suffering grand mal seizures and other neurological disturbances due to the use of NutraSweet. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to convince people that Aspartame is to blame for their child's illness. Stevia, which is a sweet herb, NOT A MANUFACTURED ADDITIVE, helps in the metabolism of sugar, which would be ideal for diabetics. It has now been approved as a dietary supplement by the FDA. It is known that for many years the FDA outlawed this "true sweet food" due to their loyalty to MONSANTO Chemical Company. Books on this subject are available: EXCITOTOXINS: THE TASTE THAT KILLS written by Dr. Russell Blayblock (Health Press 1-800-643-2665) AND: DEFENSE AGAINST ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE - written by DR H. J. Roberts, also a diabetic specialist. These two doctors will soon be posting a position paper with case histories on the deadly effects of Aspartame on the Internet. According to the Conference of the American College of Physicians "We are talking about a plague of neurological diseases directly caused by the use of this deadly poison." Herein lies the problem: There were Congressional Hearings when Aspartame was included in 100 different products and strong objection was made concerning it's use. Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent hearings and still, nothing has been done. The drug and chemical lobbies have very deep pockets. Sadly, MONSANTO'S patent on Aspartame has EXPIRED !! There are now over 5,000 products on the market that contain this deadly chemical and there will be thousands more introduced. Everybody wants a "piece of the Aspartame pie"!!! I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is. And isn't it ironic that MONSANTO funds, among others, the American Diabetes Association, the American Dietetic Association and the Conference of the American College of Physicians? This has been recently exposed in the New York Times. These Associations cannot criticize any additives or convey their link to MONSANTO because they take money from the food industry and are required to endorse their products. Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote and presented a bill that would require label warnings on products containing Aspartame, especially regarding pregnant women, children and infants. The bill would also institute independent studies on the known dangers and the problems existing in the general population regarding seizures, changes in brain chemistry, neurological changes and behavioral symptoms. The bill was killed. It is known that the powerful drug and chemical lobbies are responsible for this, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting and uninformed public.
Thats actually quite a well known hoax. See this page, which also has lots of other interesting hoaxs on it. http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/HBUrbanMyths.shtml#aspartame More here http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blasp.htm?once=true& and here http://www.junkscience.com/news/nutrasweet.html
Are You Kidding me? Aspartame poisoning is definitly not a hoax man, aspartame is one of the most dangerous chemicals out there today, and little kids are drinking this stuff thinking it's good for them. Peace and Love, Dan
Its probably not 100% healthy, especially in large quantities, but their is no medical evidance to suggest that it is as dangerous as these hoaxs make out. The only real danager is poses is that one of its componants is phenylalanine, an amino acid that is produced naturally in the body, but that in certain individuals (about 1 in 16,000 people) can't break it down, so it can build up to dangerous levels and cause brain damage. This problem can easily be identified by a routien blood test done when they are born, so anyone with this problem should know. Pregnant women also can already have high levels of phenylalanine in their blood, so they are not recommended to take it either. A hell of a lot of other products though contain a source of phenylalanine, and all show warnings on the labels so that people who are suceptable can avoid them. I'm not trying to defend it, or any other aditives in food, which I think we would all be better of without, but I want people to make sure people see both sides of the story and can make up their own mind, and don't get panicked by what is scaremongering (not by Goddess Om, but by the original creator of the hoax, which by the way is so old I'd be suprised if people havn't seen it already).
Aspartame poisoning is (rarely) reported in medical literature. It is something to be aware of, but not afraid of. If you consume a modest, or even moderate amount of aspartame, there is little chance of any problems. MS like symptoms can be caused by aspartame, but not MS itself. The symptoms resolve themseves after withdrawal of the aspartame. Everything in moderation, folks! Its really not that difficult.
This is a little scary to me due to the fact that I am totally into diet coke...I drink about 5-6 cans a day...this did make me think that I should cut this out of my diet. Any suggestions on a drink ...low in calories...that tastes good...that has caffeine...I know that next you are gonna tell me that caffeine causes something...but one step at a time
Okay, I can tell you that it is aboslutely not a hoax. My dad used to drink between 6-12 cans of diet coke every day and he got totally fucked up from it. He looked like an addict going through severe withdrawls. He'd get debilitating stomach cramps, he had muscle spasms all the time and he'd shake without the ability to control himself. He'd sweat in 50 degree weather and his eyes would get all glossed over. Eventually he started losing conscienciousness for short periods of time 5, 10, 30 seconds... and it came down to it happening while he was driving with two kids in the car. He finally went to the doctors and the determined it was aspertame. All he did was stop drinking diet pop, and ALL of the symptoms went away. Hoax? I don't think so.
My Thoughts are to drink the real thing and water/fruit juice. Burn the extra calories by walking/treadmill/some activity. We're exposed to enough airborne chemicals - why voluntarily ingest more than those which are basically unavoidable?
My uncle used to drink diet pepsi all the time, he was hooked on the stuff. He would drink more than a 6 pack a day. He got really sick from it and had to go to the hospital. He would get very shaky and sick to his stomach. He went through withdrawls from it too. I'm sorry I don't remember more about it, it was when I was younger. I know he doesn't drink diet pop any longer though.
To be honest, I think this is one of those situations where someone has taken a genuine problem and blown it out of proportion to the point where it becomes stupid. The problem here is that whilst it might be harmful in large quantities and to some people, the e-mail is making out that it is dangerous to everyone full stop. The reason you have to be careful of this sort of thing is that it makes people think "thats stupid, I know people who drink diet drinks all the time and don't have problems" and don't consider any risks involved. Its best for people to know all the facts. Anything in large quantities though is going to be harmful, and to be honest, drinking large numbers of cans of normal coke a day isn't going to do you good anyway. From what I can see the issue with aspartame is not that it contains anything dangerous, but that it contains stuff that can be dangerous if you're body can't process them as quick as you are taking them in, but that can be said of most things, even water.
the girl who asked for suggestions on what to drink instead of diet soda sweetened with aspartame: unsweetened green tea or yerba mate', black coffee, water, diet rite soda products which use splenda as a sweetener...i use splenda as a substitute for sugar myself...its scientific name is sucralose...it is derived from sugar. it certainly isn't natural because it's sugar molecules fucked around with in a lab and somehow made to have no calories, but it hasn't been shown to be toxic like aspertame or saccharin can be. i hope there's nothing wrong with it, because i like it.
Thanks to Sonador Hermosa I really appreciate the ideas that you gave me on what to drink instead of diet cola. I tried diet rite and it tastes pretty much as good as the diet coke....thanks Hopefully someday I will get rid of the bad habit of caffiene
Aspartame is not bad for you? LOL I don't believe a word of those sites. My brother used to drink 5 or 6 cans of diet pepsi/coke a day. One day he called us about headaches he had been getting out of the blue. We all shrugged it off thinking nothing of it, as being work related stress. A couple weeks later I stumbled upon article after article about how poeple were getting all sorts of medical problems from drinking said pop/cola. I immediately called my brother and told him to stop drinking any sort of aspartame. He listened, and sure enough he returned to normal. My aunt bought a 12 pack of that Coke C2...I opened them all right in front of her and poured them down the drain, shot her $5 and said "I'm sorry, but I don't want my neurons destroyed thank you very much". I have alerted my entire family, and all people within reach of me that would listen as to what the effects of aspartame are, and they all now have swore off the stuff for good. Anyone I see walking down the street with one or buying a diet soda, I pull them aside for a minute and warn them...If they don't listen, oh well I tried...it's their health.
I myself realized, that when I eat things with artificial sweeteners (very common if you watch calories), I have an extraordinary craving for carbohydrates. So I just figured, that it must work the following way: The tongue feels something sweet comming, and the brain reacts by sending messages to produce enzymes to break the "sugar" down. But then suddenly, the enzymes realize, this is no sugar, we can't break it down, and since nothing is wasted, your body graves for real carbohydrates. So it's a lot better to saturize a lil craving, with a lil REAL sweets, and then good, instead of the fake ones, and then have a real big graving.
For anyone else that wants to cut back on aspartine but keep the caffiene...Diet Shasta...made with Splenda.
Thanks...i am the same way...I drink so much diet pop at night...right before bed Thanks for the suggestions.
the thing about diet drinks is that people who drink them seem to drink them like water, can or bottle after can or bottle. people wh drink normal drinks dont drink nearly as much (cept fat people) i think ifyou dranka normal amount of diet it wouldbe fine but that nature of diet drinks means that more people will drink way too much. just be healthy, jesus. you canbuy caffiene pills you know? and drink water.
Catherine thanks for interjecting some perspective on this issue. While I don't drink NutraSweet, (it gives me a headache) I also have seen little real scientific data to support some of the more dramatic claims made. Anecdotes are often riddled with problems, as you really don't know if the infomation was presented as true, and also, other things going on in the person's life are rarely mentioned. That being said, I think consuming Nutrasweet is not a good idea. A little sugar won't hurt you. (Unless you are a diabetic.) Water is about all I drink. But there is just no real data that NutraSweet "causes" MS. We'd have an entire nation of people in wheel chairs if that were true. It does bug me when I go to someone's house, and they have nothing but diet pop to drink. Most of these people are not even needing to lose weight. I don't understand the need for people who have no medical reason to consume artificial sweetners. But, it probaby won't kill you.
