Does anyoen else consider the romanticists as original hippies? not neccesarily byronic type, but like, the young men especially were sort of anti establishment, and they want to cafe(yeah, i made it a verb..) and write poetry, and get in touch with what was human. (or so I've gathered from different books) I sort of get the idea that they were original hippies... in tighter clothes...
Anyone know of any older sort of group, before them, that were sort of classical hippies?

I see what you are getting at.

I thought that the pre-Hippies were 'The Beatniks' of the 1950s-early 1960s:

Jack Kerouack - Neal Cassady- Allen Ginsberg -William S Borroughs- to name a few.

They were personified & ridiculed in the media with beards - granny specs & berets & they recited poetry drank coffee & thumped bongos.

They began in San Francisco just like the Hippie Movement.

They prided themeselves that they were not "Squares" ;they were Bohemian "Cool Cats" & they rejected the establishment values of heavily capitalistic & militaristic societies.

I'm pretty sure that the 'Beatniks' developed into the 'Hippies' .

The Native Americans or Indains as they were called, They lived in communes/villages and smoked herb. they dressed different and held a different spiritual belief. They lived off the land and fished the waters and ate the meat the forests offerd, they were one with nature in their day to day living. Peacefull unless attacked.

I have an old hippie friend that often speaks of his late mother as being a hippie. He stated that she lived what one would consider a hippie lifestyle. She died many years ago at a very old age. She loved the land and respected it. She always showed love to everyone and lived in peace. She was born around early 1900's and was an island girl.

The majority of ancient cultures are very similar to that, Shameless heifer, so therefore hippiedom has been around as long as people have
