Hello! as some of you may know, I very recently became a vegetarian (2 days ago, to be exact ) So, I'd like to know, what are some good foods to eat with a good amount of protein in them? Thanks!
you don't even need that much protein really, the way they determined the requirement for humans was studying rats, which grow wayy faster than humans... you said your getting vanilla soymilk tonight though, that has a lot of protein in it, the kind i drink which is enriched with vitamins does anyway, you can find it at any health food store probably.... nuts and bananas are also a good source of protein, and beans.. a lot of things have protein really though, once you start paying attention to what you eat. its nothing to worry about, as long as your hair and fingernails are still growing your good to go...
Soya products Beans Nuts Quorn Fake 'meats' Cheese & Eggs (don't eat too many, they're fatty) Basically everything as protein in. So the only way to not get enough is to not eat enough of anything. Yay for the change
you can find nutritional info at the vegetarian and vegan societies. Here's the links: The Vegetarian Society The Vegan Society They're chock full of nutritional information, but to be brutally honest, protein isn't all that much of a worry. Protein is a macronutrient available from a variety of sources, and i would imagine that you would have great difficulty in not acquiring enough protein. As long as you eat a normal quantity of food, chances are that you will be getting a good amount of protein. However, it is best to be aware, so check out the Vegetarian & Vegan Society pages and see what they have to say about the issue. However, generally, beans nuts and other pulses are regarded as the better sources of protein for vegetarians, however.
Memorize this: LEGUMES ARE GOOD MUSHROOMS ARE GOOD AND, SADLY UNDERATED, GRAINS ARE GOOD! (yup, stuffed with protein they are,at least noodles,- check the back) not to mention (NON VEGAN) Eggs and milk! Hope this helped! oh, and welcome to the world of carcass free food!
in "Diet for a New America," John Robbions quotes a number like .5 grams (one half) per pound of body weight.
If you are still eating dairy and cheese, there lots of protein there too. (but try to use other sources more frequenlty, as dairy and eggs are high in saturated fat, cholesterol and cruelty) My fav source of protein has to be HUMMUS. If you haven't tried it... DO. It's a staple for many veg*ns!
