I have no idea how "rhythm and blues" became synonymous with the music we hear classed as "r 'n' b" nowadays. I'd love to know, though.

For original rhythm and blues, try some Chuck Berry. In fact, I'm gonna go listen to some Chuck Berry now.

I think the person most responsible for setting the template that changed rhythm 'n' blues to r'n'b is Prince... his early stuff was always at the top of the r'n'b charts in the states... stuff like Controversy and Dirty Mind... then he went mega with Purple Rain... but then look at the sound of Parade... really stripped back and basic... just think of Kiss... that is your template for modern r'n'b...

Hi Folks, I think your right Mr Power_13, just like rock and roll, this R&B "label" just denotes that the music is made by black people. That is what it has in common with aretha and otis or muddy waters. Don't s'pose anyone remembers America's top ten, TV prog with Casey Chasum? (incidentally, i think he was also famous for being the voice of scooby doo) On the programme there were different charts; Rock, Pop, Country, and "The Black Charts" even as a child i was bemused by this, as in england music by people of all ethnic backgrounds would rub shoulders in the same chart on Top of the Pops. Seems america is still very segregated, i read recently that it is now more segregated, in many places than it was before the civil rights movent.
What do you recon?
Incidently i hate most modern "R&B" as much as the next man, but have you heard affrodizziac by Brandi? It's a great new tune.

Going to see Roots Manuva tonight, can't wait, his last show in Aberdeen was amazing. My favourite roots songs would have to be Dreamy Days, Where My Mind Is At, Witness(the fitness) and his brilliant version of Yellow Submarine. I've been blasting a lot of Jurassic5 today,another great act who are more interested in their rhymes rather than their wallets.
