When the forums first restarted in May, not only did I not introduce myself, but I also didn't post but 4 times until the end of August. Only recently have I redeemed myself. So now, I think I should introduce myself again. Hello to everyone here. My name is Holly. I live in northeast Missouri, a tiny college town surrounded by nothing but corn. I attend Truman State University as a history major. But I'm not a very boring person at all. My interests include barefooting, music, talking about everything and nothing with just about anyone, anything British, football (not yankball), and these forums. I've been a hardcore barefooter since coming to university, but I've always had an interest, especially after working in a few musicals in my high school theatre program. My music interests are broad, diverse, and manic. You can frequently catch a sad R.E.M. tune followed immediately by something Tiny Tim sings. I like house, prog, trance, rock, some country (not much), psychadelic rock, and doowop. My favourite band at the moment is T. Rex. I think Marc Bolan was a very understated artist. I am an anglophile. I write with some British spellings. I listen to lots of british music, watch british telly programs, and basically know more about that culture than is good for me considering I live here and not there. But fear not, one day that will be remedied. I also like british football. I support Queens Park Rangers. And it's difficult to support a team over 4000 miles away from you, but I try. And one day, there will not be 4000 miles seperating us, and I will be a happy girl. On these forums, I look into just about every sub-forum. But my favourites will always be Random Thoughts and Bare It! I mod that last one So hello. It's nice to meet you. Now, some of you older members. You should say hi and introduce yourselves as well.
hi there fellow free spirt its a shame that the music that inspires is out done by the artists that just wont mouny. but hay liston on and spread the good to the un turned carry on being you and dame the man love hope and rainbows sunflower
You only wish... But I will sing for you when I meet you...and you'll scream "SHUT UP! I CAN'T TAKE ANYMORE! MY EARS!"
Living in the UK, its hard to see why you like it so much. Do you watch british soaps? Really, be careful what you base your stereotypes on. Our television paints a very unfaithful image. The cities are generally generic, grey concrete. We have mcdonalds on every street corner, we wear nike shoes. We have a monarchy. That might seem novel from several thousand miles away but when you've you're on the dole or if your council flat attracts drug addicts, that money those bastards suck out of you to pay for their big weddings, palaces and jewels seems like theft. We have a government which continues to repress the unions despite being called "Labour". Its leadership is unaccountable and simply ignored the 2 million marching through London against the war in Iraq. But where is the alternative? So, we live under a dictatorship which bleeds us dry, we have very little by the way of unique culture besides fish and chips. Oh, there is also our marvelous historical legacy. The British colonialism sold half the world to slavery. Dont even get me startes on football. The best thing to come out of this country was Punk but even that is dead now. I urge you not to come to the UK unless you are loaded and can afford a proper penthouse in London to live the fairytale... and if thats the latter is true then i hope your plane crashes on the way over.
wow That was the bleakest picture to be painted of any area...even if it is true... No, I don't watch british soaps. I HATE soap operas... I've been getting the short end of the American stick for my entire life. I live in the ninth poorest district in my nation, my education until university was laughable at best, I've been homeless more times than I care to count, and everytime I've needed government intervention for something that's happened to me, they've ignored it and sided with those that had more money. I'd gladly go to the UK even being poor...Why? Because if I'm going to be treated like shit by a government under which I live, I want there to be a reason, goddammit!
Yo kids, there is no truely 'perfect' government & I believe that is easier to make changes in America (UK folks please correct me if I'm wrong). Many people have told me that we also have more undeveloped areas, that even our yards are very large compare to the UK (unless you have the $$$ for an estate) But I'm not here to tell you what to like athough learning to appreciate your current home makes life happier; you can spend years running to find something that isn't there while forgetting that the 'purple grass' was under your feet the whole time. Welcome to the neighborhood!
I erm...well, it's also about travel, I think...seeing different areas....Because growing up, I was in an area that had NO appreciation for any other way of life...none...You grew up, graduated highschool (or not), got married, had babies, and lived out your days in a very boring, I'm a redneck type way. I was ostrasized for wanting to spread my wings and fly away. I was not made to feel welcome in my home town and so to compensate, I spent quite a bit of time learning about other cultures and areas of the world. I liked the British best of all, but hell, I want to be a world citizen, to travel and to learn to appreciate what I have by giving back to others...I know that no area is perfect...Hell, as far as I'm concerned, the only good government is a non-existent one....But I have tried to adapt to the existence that I have...I just want to be able to do other things and see other places as well...
