The local college radio station played a reggae show last weekend and it really impressed me. I didn't write down any of the artists, so I've been doing some searches into good reggae music. Obviously Marley, but I already own much of his work. I'm looking into broadening my horizons. Any recommendations?
please please please check out 'Groundation'. im DYING to know what people think. I cant get enough. Here are some recommendations: Weak Heart, Throwing Stones, Wanna Know, Head Strong here is a description of them: The most immediately striking aspect of Groundation's sound is lead singer Harrison Stafford's impassioned wailing. With his raspy yet melodic flow, he seems to channel Bob Marley, combined with HR's energy and a little bit of his own righteous, thoughtful, conceptual lyrics. After listening to this album, I had to search out a photo of him to verify that he was indeed just some white American . . . not that there's anything wrong with that. The power behind Groundation doesn't stop there, however; their music is enthralling and at times quite inventive, incorporating elements of jazz (the founding members of the group studied jazz in college) in tunes which travels seamlessly from jazz to reggae and back to jazz
bob marley really annoys me, and infact i must say that he's my least liked reggae artist... keep an eye out for the trojan box sets, theres like 3 cd's for about £10 i dont know how much in dollars, but they are dirt cheap, and they really provide you with a good range of reggae but if your looking for specifics i recommend people like desmond decker and jimmy cliff
everyone mentioned the good/obvoius ones except..for the Skatalites. but the gladiators are good too. I like hepcat too, though they are more ska than reggae .
