Metrics or free verse? I find that most people I've met prefer free verse over metrics any day. Most of them state that free verse allows more flexibility. What do you people think about that?
Wow, that's a hard one. A lot of times my metric poems come out sounding contrived, which I don't like. But when I do get one that flows as well as I strive for without forcing the meter or rhyme, I appreciate it more, because I had to work for it, and it is almost a tribute to the classical poetic style. But free verse poetry lets me speak my heart more easily. Without the bounds of the rules of meter, I can more clearly express myself. I wish I had more of my poems. My ex that "Picture of a Moment" is about burned my old notebooks... Nice, huh? C'est la vie A lifetime's worth of work disappears in less than ten minutes. But I'm not bitter. I look forward to sharing my new stuff with you guys (If I ever get some time to write anything... curse these darn slavedrivers at my job... ).
I had some notebooks I lost also. It sucked because I had lots of poems and notes in them. My mom sent me a box with some of my books and the box got lost. I'm currently in Nicaragua and these people down here don't have any answers as to what happened to my box. I wish I could remember some of the stuff that were in those notebooks. Now I have to just write more. I agree that one feels accomplished when composing metrics, but I prefer free verse. I like to mix both styles at times, it gives the poem a nice shift of rythm and I also find the use of alliteration to be very effective in any form.
I like metrics quite a lot, but it's very hard to write in metrics and I can't say what I want to say in the poem freely then, so I prefer free verse. Metrics are more like a tribute to the old poetry, in my opinion. Love, Borut P.S.:That idea of mixing both sounds great, never tried it before, though.
counting out syllables and rhyming from free thought really takes the metaphor to that next level, transmutes thought and feeling into something that engraves the verse into the subconsious, planting a seed for future action on its account. but free verse, especially in ripple23's style, is so...?... it just hits me with that fleeting feeling of rolling out of the bed in the morning, hitting the ground running, straight out of a dream and into the space between that i thought i had abandoned... i love recieving peoples' feelings and ideas, in any form. standing in the wake of their experience... there's no substitute for it.
