So I got another tattoo today. This is only number 2, so it's not like I get them regularly. It's the chinese symbol for "dancer"...being I've been dancing for 20 of my 22 years and something that has pretty much been the only thing I've been able to commit to in my life, I thought it was fitting. It's along the side of my foot. I think it looks pretty decent. Didn't hurt that badly when I was getting it done, but aches like a bugger right now.

But this tattoo got me thinking...why do people get them? Is it a fashion statement? Is it "the cool thing to do"? Why would we mutilate our bodies in this way? I suppose the same goes for piercings. I've had my nose pierced for almost three years...I have no idea why I got it. I just walked into a tattoo parlor and instead of getting a tattoo, I got my nose pierced...*shrugs* I really don't know...Guess I'm just really impulsive.

Why do you have tattoos or piercings? What made you decide on the tattoos and piercings that you have? Is it vanity? In some cultures tattoos and scarification are rights of passages...but what use does it have in American culture?

Well, I got my tattoo because I think they're beautiful, like having art permanently on your body. Bloody expensive though and the after-care is a bitch. My nose, well... I think that some piercings look very nice and the nose was definately one of them. I just have a small shiny stud in it now (clear faux stone, sparkly and fun) so it makes my nose look nicer without being really in your face about it. the nipple piercings were a bit impulsive though... a local piercing store was having a sale on them on valentine's day and, well, I thought they would be awesome to have. I still stare at my tit's for like, five full minutes a day to admire the piercings lol

well, most people get it to rebel...... but its hardly rebellious when every body gets them. I just rebel by not getting one at all. its all been done before. piercings are even worse. if I had to chose doing one thing, I think Id get a tattoo before anything pierced.

Me and my brother were talking to each other
'Bout what makes a man a man
Was it brain or brawn, or the month you were born
    We just couldn't understand

Our old man didn't like our appearance
He said that only women wear long hair

So me and my brother borrowed money from Mother
We knew what we had to do
We went downstairs, past the barber and gymnasium
    And got our arms tattooed

    Welcome to my life, tattoo
I'm a man now, thanks to you
    I expect I'll regret you
But the skin graft man won't get you
You'l be there when I die
    Tattoo

My dad beat me 'cause mine said "Mother"
But my mother naturally liked it and beat my brother
'Cause his tattoo was of a lady in the nude
And my mother thought that was extremely rude

    Welcome to my life, tattoo
We've a long time together, me and you
    I expect I'll regret you
But the skin graft man won't get you
You'll be there when I die
    Tattoo

Now I'm older, I'm tattooed all over
    My wife is tattooed too
    A rooty-toot-toot, rooty-tooty-toot-toot
    Rooty-toot-toot tattoo too
    To you
