at first, flat and dusty, then otherworldy in the badlands, then very beautiful in the black hills....not sure what the towns are like really.
I am 45 years old and i have always been a traveler. I have always, since i can remember, had this desire to move to south dakota, deadwood more specifically. Ive never been there, but i have seen pictures, read countless articles and stories and exchanged mail with the local chamber of commerce. I just know that one day, I will end up in south dakota. How do I feel about south dakota you ask? Heck, its my home state, but i just aint made it there yet.
i live a few miles from the north border of it, so i've been down there a bit, went to Terry's Peak for the one & only time (that's another story) that i went skiing, so if you like to ski...& Lemmon (a small town just below the border) is fairly well know for potheads... people go to shade hill to party & Rapid City to shop... & that's about all i can tell you, haven't seen much of the south or east part of the state, if any...
I was just in the badlands (slept there!) and the black hills area. Very nice, It wasnt at all what I had envisioned.
The black hills are the best place in South Dakota, in my opinion... Then, again, it is where I live so I might be a bit prejudice. There's alot of pot heads in South Dakota in general. At least 75% of the people in most of the smaller towns smoke pot, it's not just Lemmon.. It's beautiful out here, but of course the best spots are the hidden ones which only us locals know about.. But if any of you guys every make it up to the black hills, then maybe we can meet up and I can show you some of the better sights, better than mount rushmore... asnakeinthegrass, hopefully you make it to the lead/deadwood area, it's really nice down there, and the community itself is good.
Rushmore was actually a lot cooler than I thought it was going to be. The crazy horse monument was a bit of a let down, though when its finished (in 300 years) it will be awesome. I think they are crazy (zing!) for not accepting the government grant to help finish it.
NAMASTE NAMASTE Between Spearfish and lead what one is more hippie friendly??? In Love and Light Eccofarmer
I'm lovin' this thread...I am very drawn to South Dakota too, although I've never been there...I"ve done some research on the Web, (and would definitely visit before I moved there), and I've been having dreams galore about it (I know I'm in South Dakota in the dreams, and feel very at home there...may be symbology, but who knows??) I'm drawn to both Sioux Falls and Rapid City...or anywhere else that may be like home for this older hippie chick...
I grew up in south dakota...aberdeen, to be exact...and while a lot of people who grow up there think it's awful and can't wait to get away, i actually kinda like it...so if anyone has questions about the state, moon meadows and i should have the west side and the east side covered
South Dakota is the final frontier....most of it is yet untouched. I enjoy Custer State park very much. The badlands are so full of history! Mount Rushmore is pretty cool and the chipmunks scurrying around the park make it worthwhile. The middle of SoDa (lol). all the way east isn't much to see...similar to Nebraska, North Dak., Kansas, Iowa, Missouri. Sioux Falls is the largest city in South Dakota but still isn't much. my sister and her husband live and work here but wanna move back to Death valley,CA....maybe that shows you how kool S.D. is!
