I know that there's a crap load more of them. But yeah, do you think that show could actually help out some people or is it just another example of how music is so over-manufactured?
For example, (now I'm not actually watching american idol this season) but there's this one guy on there who has a band and has them open for concerts for american idol and stuff.
And there's another guy on there who doesn't sing with recordings, but just with an accustic guitar.
These guys seem like their real musicians just trying to get their name out there.
But then there's people like Kelly Clarkson, who, when she came out, said that she wasn't going to be pressured about how she looked and her weight, and now she's thin as a board. GRR! I hate it when things like that happen.

    proffessional karaoke singers

they're the people that go to the pub RELIGOUSLY every tuesday DON'T get drunk and show off that they can sing OTHER people's music better than all the drunken fools that just sing karaoke for fun... which is my understanding what karaoke is for ..... drunken fun...

lame .... however i do kind of get a morbid kick out of watching simon crush hopeful peoples dreams of becoming the next big manufactured superstar...

I also noticed something... I think if you go to the audition... and PURPOSELY SUCK ASS... you will be guaranteed to get on TV at the season end A WHOOOOLE NEEEEEEW WOOOOORLD

PS what ever happened to those people that actually won a couple years ago??? like the fat dude or the faggy guy Burger King or McDonalds??

music being manufactured. Record companies are guaranteed that these people will sell. They tell me that there used to be bands that could play instruments....

WEll thats just my opinion i spose, i just dont like those ppl like ashlee simpson and them who like cant write, play or sing. I mean like wheres the talent?

I try not to think about it, because when I do my blood pressure starts to rise, I get all depressed (thinking about pop culture and the sorry state of music today) and start feeling the need to heavily self-medicate. ;) On the positive side, it makes me want to stretch my musical experiments further and further out into left field to help try to counterbalance this crap in some small way...

I think it would be much more interesting if each Idol contestant had to write a tune (including arrangements for the band), rehearse it with the band, and lead it in performance. I might think about watching the show then, and also might be prone to think of the participants as something more than musical factory workers.

I totally agree. Then the show may actually have some substance.

American idol is a show to pick the next pop-superstart-singer for 14 year old girls to worship and vote for on TRL. it is designed to make the record label t hat puts on the show money.

It does not encompass musical talent, or even vocal talent, instead it relies completely on how well t hey can sell the person... putting on the show is just a great way to sell the person, OMFG THEY WON AMERICAN IDOL T HEY MUST BE GOOD!

LOTS of people can sing well... that isnt what makes a person successful... to be successful in Pop culture/mainstream radio you just need the looks and the right boss that will make your beats and lyrics for you. to be successful in the underground you need uniqueness, talent, and authenticity.

Johnny whitney from the blood brothers is a better vocalist than everyone and anyone who will win american idol.

im from england and theres been loads of shows like that on (pop idol etc) except i think there a load crap, lol cos the majority of artists who actually end up winning them don't actually get anyway at all! and one show disallowed anyone from using an instrument, maybe if they focused on bands , and there material then maybe it could be a bit more success

at least an overweight girl even got into that one. Simon Cowell would never let someone like that past the audition stage, unless it were a guy, like Rubben. I personally know some good singers who've tried out for Canadian Idol, and didn't get by cuz of their weight/looks. So what, to be and idol, you have to be what society calls hot?.....grrrr.

i recon theyre silly kareoke shows.

we need a big battle of the bands but.. not pop groups or actually anything prerecorded. so 'national live battle of the bands'
    that would be more interesting.

or have different ones for different styles

I cant watch any of those shows. I feel my IQ drop with every minute I watch. That goes for 'Survivor" and all those other crap reality shows as well. Come to think of it, I dont really watch TV anymore unless it's the news or a sporting event I want to see. Guess Im just old. Damn Kids...LOL

I think that we're talking about 2 different shows. I was reffering to American idol. There were quite a few really good singers who were bigger girls, and he said, "well, you have a good voice, but you just don't look the part. There's a certain standard that you have to meet." blah. That's why I don't watch that show.

well we are talking about different show...but we dont call our one brittish idol! we have pop idol. and simon cowell didnt like her but the other judges thought she could sing so she got in and the public voted her in! pop idol started over here first, and then you got american idol....and he is a bit of a bastard but its the image hes going for! each to their own....he does hav to up with days of watching people sing BADLY, no excuse really for being so damn nasty but some ppl need to be told that they cant get in tune, nevermind actually sing....i kno its harsh but i suppose they find out sooner rather than when they are 40, overwaight, and living in a slum coz they put all there money into a dream that could never happen..

wow im a cynic!! :p sorry folks to bring down the mood a notch or two!

well i actually like canadian idol. The winners are really cool individuals who are very talented, multi-talented, might i add..most of them play instruments and Canadian Idol didn't sell out like American..With all those cheesey singalong ads for Ford and shit...

now that I have to agree with.
I've thought about trying out, just to see what would happen. But then I think that I may feel like a sell out to this whole manufactured music thing, which is something that I've been against since I got into music.
I do think that, though, when it comes to Canada, a lot the music that comes out of our country has a lot more talent and substance than the US in general.
