I think you can trace the decline of western civilization to the opening of the first FEBO in Amsterdam. On a more positve note, there's a great little Falafal joint on the Rembrantspein with a self serve salad bar where, if you're good, you can pile a shitload of fixings onto your falafal. It takes a little practice, in my case years, but it's a skill well worth learning.
i've actually been to that place and it is fantastic! definately my favorite shorama ?sp? fallafel place in town. Did you know that there actual were automats in NYC in the 70's? mom saw them often.....also have seen them in a great movie called dark city. in this movie the city was fashioned on "stolen memories" of human beings! So our decline started way before febo hit a-dam
things to consider and a couple possible options off the top of my head a. route 1. immediate cirlce 2. south strip b. group size 1. we can only chill in larger shops with a group of this size 2. we can only pick up gear at the smaller shops with a group of this size 1. immediate circle: de kuil (chill), west to coffeeshop anyday (pickup only) south one block to chocolata (pick up only), west two blocks to amnesia (big couches to chill on), south one block to grey area (pick up only), east two blocks to homegrown fantasy (chill here). ADVANTAGES: easy to walk it in a big fun group (trams will be busy). neat loop with nice chill spots and excellent pickup points in between 2. south strip tram to damsquare, hit up abraxas, kadinsky, tweede kamer, dampkring, and bushdoctor.
I know I'm dating myself but I remember those FEBO style resturants from when I lived in New York City, I think they were called Horn and Hardets. FEBO has taken them one step further by removing the resturant all together and making it like a giant outdoor vending machine. I do love those fries!
makes sense...my mom is in her early 50's....but she does remember full automats! oh the fries...how many different sauces can we put on a potato people? LOL
Early 50's eh? did Mom ever experience the Amsterdam automats? It might bring back some memories. I lost count, what is it 2 weeks and counting?
I also barely remember those cafeteria places, I think my mom brought me to them once. the fried chicken wasn't to bad at febo. man was I was hammered when I was eating there....that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it. lol
a few years ago there was a sudden influx of frites joints in NYC. NOw there is only one left but damn it is good. you can get the big bag of fries with the dutch mayo or any one of about 50 different sauces.
Maybe my memory of Krokets are fuzzy or maybe what I pulled out of the FEBO mystery door wasn't a Kroket at all. It wasn't sushi that's for sure. Then again it was late at night and God knows at that hour, after a night on the town, a person will eat anything, even something out of a FEBO mystery door.
This is the beauty of the Dam. Lots of different people doing different shiat. I'm in town for the event as a guest of a Dutch relative for my first queens day - New Years/Xmas/Summer is a blast but apparently this is the big one so I'm starting my rehab in advance. I'm not breathing for 3 weeks prior, just a bit of inhaling, infusing and imbibing of the stuff to come. Looking forward to bumping into you all - or not. Shiny J
shiny shiny j, you can meet us at the dekuil coffeeshop on friday the 29th at 4pm if you would like. we'll be sporting tye dye in order to identify each other...and to make one hell of a group picture!! see you in the dam......2 WEEKS TO QUEENS DAY!!! 11 days to the dam for me!!!
Many thanks Mopperm, the invite is appreciated and acknowledged. I'd rather not commit myself in case I didn't make in the end - there will be at least 6 of us as a bunch of us are meeting up there (friends from London, Rome and Paris) so I'd rather not dictate what we're up to or even bother making plans any more complex than; 1) Have a good time wherever I am. 2) That's it. I will however ensure that anyone I see in tie dye is greeted with a secret handshake implying that we know each other. The secret handshake will have to agreed in advance however cause otherwise it will just be, well y'know, a handshake from a stranger..... I've ordered a bunch of Orange feather boas for the occasions so you might be able to identify us too - either way I hope you have a weekend to remember; I fear my faculties might not be up to remembering afterwards as happened at New Years just gone (but my friends tell me I enjoyed myself!) Peace and sandwiches....
Hey Cats, All these photos are really wetting my appitite, I'm looking forward to meeting you guys. I too share a connection to Rome having spent several years in school there. I'll keep my eyes open for the Boas. Me, I'll be wearing my lucky Tie-tye shirt. Any more news on this houseboat party? Will funny hats be part of the dress code?
