So, I'm sewing machine moronic (I plan to learn how to use one in May-ish, when I get one) and I always sew by hand. Long story short, I was wondering if a) anyone else does it, and b) anyone has any time-saving tips. I just can't always afford 3 hours per skirt. Thanks a lot for any replies.
I sew by hand as well because for one reason or another, I have a mental block when it comes to using my sewing machine, and also, because I have a pathetic attention span. Which also means that if I'm sewing by hand, it's simply a quick stitch of maybe a torn seam or a lost button, so nothing of "project" value. *giggles* I was trying to make my daughter's baby doll a dress not long ago and didn't make it past the first sleeve, and not even the WHOLE sleeve, just half of it. *lol*
Glue, eh? Hmm... Do you think wood glue would work? Aww, half of the sleeve sounds just like me about two months ago. I used to try to hem a pair of trousers and would get distracted and would just wear the trousers with the partially uneven hems. *coughs* But, yeah, now suddenly, I'm sewing entire dresses. Donno how that happened...
Yeah! You just gotta hope that you get attacked by the empty closet and empty wallet bug. Hehe. Honestly, I think that once my closet has clothes in it again, I'll be done.
Wow.. I sewed by hand for a while. . . but nothing bigger than a bag..... I dont think their are to many time saveing tips.. Aside from get to a sewing machine... More power to you on sewing by hand... I can imagine the feeling of accomplishment after sewing something like a dress
I've done a lot of sewing by hand, mostly 'cause all our Prehistory period clothing at Archeon is hand-sewn, but I've made one or two non-period things as well. If it's not necessary for it to be period & genuinely hand-stitched, there is a kind of tape/stuff you can use for hems. You fold the hem, put this whitish 'tape' in between, iron it, and it sticks together. I don't know what it's called but maybe someone on this thread does or if you describe it in a hobby & crafts store I'm sure they'll know. Other than that, if your project isn't too big & bulky, take it along when you go places where you may have to wait (appointments, public transport). Not advisable for huge projects or stuff that needs real careful measuring all the time
Aaah, that hem tape crap. I tried some of that, and even though it said it'd even last through washing/drying, it peeled off. Very annoying. And that's really cool that you do period stuff! I've always loved it, but have also always been too impatient to try it out.
