They can be new/old/dead/alive/split up etc. I think this will be a grand way for you allto recommend musicians to each other. You can write why you like them, your favourite album, a link to their bibliography or their homepage, a piece about them, link to downloads.. whatever you like. I am not going to be harsh and giveyou a word count... OK 5,000 words please oh ok I'm only kidding... its up to you how long you want to make it I really look forward to reading your posts. Have fun
Right, Most of you will laugh, when i say, in all seriousness, that one of my favorite bands is none other than ...hanson! But honestly, if you forget the days when they ruled the charts next to PJ &Duncun (ant and dec for everone not old enough to remember their musical days!) and the fact that they were pee-wee american kids, that sang well...lets face it cheesy songs such as mmmbop, they are accually extreamly melodic and talented guys (yes thats right! they've grown up!) Their first album Middle of nowhere was a massive hit, whether you like to admit it or not, and i'd argue that at some point in your life you've tapped your foot to a hanson song! They were a world hit, and i know a lot of acts can admit that, but for a pop band, they were big! touring all over the world! they write and play all of their songs, they produce them, and have released SIX albums! so if you compare them to a lot of other pop acts they've got a lot going for them! i mean, westlife had their greatest hits out, and they'd only been around for a year! Their sound is also very original (believe it or not) they fuse 50's melodic rock and roll with modern song writting! you may think that their cheesy and annoying, and look back and laugh but i ask you all to download (or ask me for) a track called penny and me, or infact just download their lastest album "underneath" and wether you like it or not, its really good pop songwritting! and next time your in a club, and mmmbop comes on, i challenge you not to dance! oh, and did i mention they still play sell out gigs, including one in london the other month? rock and roll!
My favourite band is Radiohead. They have now been round for about 15 years, forming in 1989 and in that time have released 6 albums. These are: Pablo Honey (1993), the Bends (1995), OK Computer (1997), Kid A (2000), Amnesiac (2001), Hail to the Thief (2003). They have also released a number of EPs and live albums as well. The lead singer of Radiohead is Thom Yorke, who was originally singing in the punk band TNT, but asked the TNT bass player, Colin Greenwood if he wanted to join him and guitar player Ed O'Brien in a new band. Phil Selway started playing drums in the band. Colin's younger brother Jonny joined, first on the harmonica, then keyboards. He is now the lead guitarist. They were originally named "On a Friday" as they rehearsed on Fridays, but when signed to EMI, changed their name to Radiohead after Talking Head's song "Radio Head" from the True Stories album. Their sound is very original, so it is very hard to describe them. I will just say this. They are amazing. If you listen to all their albums in chronological order, you can hear their musical progression. Thom Yorke's lyrics are breathtakingly beautiful, and the rest of the band's musical skill surpasses that of many of their peers. They tend to be depressing and quite downbeat though, so this may be part of the reason why people try to avoid them. It is hard to recommend just one song for others to download. However, even though Karma Police is my all time favourite song, I would suggest downloading Paranoid Android. It is a brilliant song that manages to completely reinvent itself repeatedly throughout its 6 minute length, and is a brilliant way to sample the different sounds of Radiohead.
My favourite band is Pink Floyd! Originaly called Leonards Lodgers (and a few other things, they could never really make their minds up) they started off as a little-known rhythm and blues group doing small time gigs in the early '60s. The band eventually decided on the name Pink Floyd, after two of singer/guitarist Syd Barrett's favourite blues singers, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. When Syd started to write a lot of his own weird and wonderful material, the band soon became very popular as a psychedelic rock group. In 1967 they signed a recording contract with EMI, and their first single "Arnold Layne" was released shortly thereafter. Above: original Pink Floyd line-up, featuring (from left to right) Roger Waters on bass guitar, Nick Mason on drums, Syd Barrett on guitar and lead vocals, and Rick Wright on the keyboards. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was the Floyd's first album, and is a stunning collection of totally trippy, colourful songs, most of them composed by Syd. Unfortunately, Syd Barrett like so many rock stars went on one too many acid trips, eventually becoming quite crazy, and during the recording of Floyd's second album, he had to be discreetly dropped from the band line up. Dave Gilmour was brought in on guitar, first to help out while Syd was being teperamental, then to actually replace him as Pink Floyd frontman. New Floyd line-up, with Dave Gilmour (second from the left) playing guitar. Syd went on to record two legendary solo albums, "The Madcap Laughs," and "Barrett" before quietly dissapearing from the music scene. Over all the years that they were together, Pink Floyd's style changed an awful lot, but I think they always managed to produce some very interesting and original pieces of music, as well as writting some great and meaningful lyrics. If anyone wants a website to check out, my favourite one is http://www.pinkfloyd-co.com it has all kinds of groovy stuff on it; so what are you waiting for? Click the link!
For my answer to this post I was having some trouble thinking of who to do it. The Beatles were on my list and are a band that means a lot to me. But instead of doing a piece on the whole band I thought I would look and chooser my favourite member and someone I admire greatly. Mr George Harrison. I have chosen George in particular as he, to me, was the most talented and the most laid back. He has written so many amazing songs and contributed greatly to the change in the direction of The Beatles musically with his love of India and the sitar. He was a highly spiritual man. George Harrison was born on 24th Feburary 1043 … later he found out when he was actually born on the 25th… to his bus driver father Harold an house wife mother Louise. George attended Dovedale Primary School. George was good student and finished his education at the boys school, Liverpool Instiute where he met Paul McCartney. The two boys travelled to school together on the bus and when they met they both discovered they had a love for music. Paul introduced George to John Lennon. Paul and John were in a band called The Quarrymen. At first George was told he was too young to become a member but was asked to become one. In 1960 the mark of the creation of The Beatles they went to Hamburg where the played clubs. George still under 18 an by Hamburg law he wasn’t allowed to work in a club after midnight. George was deported and sent back to England. In 1962 The Beatles were well underway and gained and gained a contract with Parlophone giving way to Beatlemania. George… nicknamed the quiet Beatle… was overshadowed by the writing collaboration of Lennon / McCartney. His potential involvement as a member had not yet been recognised. On the set of Beatles film A Hard Days Night George met Patti Boyd, who ecame his wife Janurary 1966. At the end of 1965 George was gaining interest in the Indian culture and music . With no idea of how to play the sitar George invested in one and had come up with cord to John’s song Norweigan Wood . Soon the aitar was apparent in Revolver and continued to the album Sgt Peppers. George hasd also penned some amazing songs including While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Something. Frank Sinatra called Something “the most beautiful love song eer written’ but was corrected as he thought it was written by John. In 1966 George spent a month studying to play sitar with Ravi Shankar and to do yoga in India. In 1967 he and the boys went to Bangor, North Wales to do a course on meditation by Marharishi Mahach Yagi. George toured the US in 1974 but after being called too experimental and didn’t play any Beatles songs he didn’t tour again until 1991. 1970 saw the spilt of The Beatles, George went off th record the songs that he had written. The result was the triples disk album ‘All Things Must Pass’. The album feature tracks co-written with Bob Dylan and also the hit single ‘My Sweet Lord’. ‘My Sweet Lord’ was later removed from the chart as a plagiarism report was held against it of the Chifton track ‘She’s SO Fine’. George and Patti divorced in 1977. Patti later married George’s friend Eric Clapton but George never hated him and they remained friends until the end. George met Dark Horse records secretary Olivia Arias. Olivia gave birth to their son Dhani in 1978 and they were soon married. 1988 saw the fomatuion of The Travelling Willburys with Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty and the late and a great great musician Roy Orbison. The band released 2 albums. In 1992 George preformed his first tour for 17 years in Japan. 1995 saw the release of The Beatles Anthology. Throughout his musical periods he had a passion for films and his film production company, Hand Made Films produced many films, the fgilms included the Monty Python film ‘Life of Brian’, ‘Time Bandits’ and Withnail and I. George gained a cameo in ‘Life Of Brian’. In 1998 George was diagnosed with throat cancer and in December 2000 he was attacked by a man in an attempted murder. This attack shook and damaged a frail George Harrison. On November 29th 2001 George Harrison died of the disease at a friend Los Angeles house at the age of 63. To mark the year anniversary of his death My Sweet Lord was re-released and a relese of his final album Brainwashed. 2002 also saw the concert ‘A Concert for George’ featuring a collection of his friends. The death of George Harrison shook the public not mention myself, it made me cry. Writing this has been an educational experience learning about such a quiet fantastic man as well as sad. George Harrison will forever be in my heart Thank you
after much deliberation i'm going to write about bright eyes... basically...conor oberst is god...him and bill hicks are my all time heroes...bill hicks for obvious reasons...conor...maybe not quite so obvious... he started writing and recording music in his basement when he was 13...and since has amassed a back catalogue of music that would make a lot of other musicians feel guilty for not working hard enough...to me he is the epitome of what a songwriter should be...he writes for the love of writing and playing music...not for the money...not for the fame...just because he can't do anything else... 1994, he attracted the attention of the american music media with his band commander venus. After releasing two albums commander venus disbanded, but not before they formed Saddle creek records, under which the former members released all their following material. As well as serving as conor's own label, he also released albums by, then underground (and still not very well known) acts such as Cursive, the faint, azure ray and the good life. The line up of bright eyes changes all the time. All of the members are in other bands from around his hometown, and according to schedules and demands the line-up changes accordingly. I would recommend everyone listen to his latest LP "Lifted or the story is in the soil, keep your ear to the ground", the subject matter and the way it is all approached makes it a record you can listen to many many times before you start to get bored of it. Conor's voice is perfectly suited to the music he writes and the raw, fractured vocals give it an extra dimension of emotion that far too many artists lack these days. The sometimes conversational way conor writes adds to the emotional depth that the songs are sown with. Added to his ability to write simple attractive tunes and melodies and the bold, affected delivery of his lyrics, it is easy to see why he is a cult icon in so many places. http://www.thestoryinthesoil.com/home.html http://www.saddle-creek.com/
Chumbawamba - But pls ignore the tunthumping album, I think they were just having a bit of a laugh with all that rubbish.....Go right back to "Pictures of Starving children sells records" and you will see how good they can be...There new album rocks....In fact everything (excluding tubthumping) has been pretty much excellent..... Alice In Chains! ok now this is a bit harsh... i also love pearl jam and soundgarden and grunge in general but alice in chains are the best. i mean they had a manky but INCREDIBALLY gud guitarist - Jerry Cantrell and they had a damned holy great and odd voice belonging to Layne. and the best drummer ever (now thats probably bollocks i dont no much bout drums but he is great and hes bin drummin since he was 5!) Sean Kinney. and then there is the first bassist they had who had great hair and was pretty smoldery. and the second one who used to play for ozzy with HUGELY MASSIVE hair. they were ACE well they still are really. even if layne is now dead (awww). theyre the heaviest grunge really more sludge in places or at least thats how it was described to me at first and i think it fits. yeh theyre ace. they appeal to grungers and metalers cos they are both! and i like things that can fit in more than one "catagory" theyre alway gud. they are amazing. i mean i have even warmed to mr cantrell to whom i took an immediate disliking but actually im sure hes an ok bloke and he is a damn good guitarist. if only no one had invented whatever layne overdosed on (coke and heroin or something) then theyd still be here! and if ur into comedy all you need to do is take a look as some of the combinations of hair and clothes and clothes that layne had, and youll get a gud giggle. but anyway alice in chains are great!

My music hero is Willie Nelson. Willie spent the 60s waiting to become a star within the ultra-conservative Nashville system, allowing himself to be groomed and controlled by country music producers and record company execs. He wrote some great songs that other people recorded, including "Crazy" and "Night Life", but success never came for Willie. When his Nashville home burned down Willie took it as an omen and moved back to his home state,Texas, heading for Austin,a melting pot of cowboys, hippies and blues artists. There he decided to grow his hair long, sport a thick beard (which was bloody radical back then),and start doing his own things musically as well, incorporating blues and rock into his country music to create a hybrid that was none of those styles, but all of them at the same time. And 35 years later he's still doing exactly the same thing, only now he's got a hundred albums, multiple marriages, multiple drug busts,a famous battle with the IRS (who took umbrage for some reason that he owed them $30 million in back taxes),and a duet with Julio Iglesias behind him. Willie is really the coolest, cheesiest pot-smoking septuagenarian on the planet, and he stands undefeated as the bloke with the coolest hair in music. His album "Tougher than Leather",in which a bad-ass cowboy reincarnates and gets electrocuted in another lifetime because his karma has caught up with him is my all-time favourite.
Hiya Gypsy Davy, I love my reggae, and only like the odd bit of country. Have you heard the New Toots (formerly of Toots and the Maytals) album? My mate did me a copy, it's brilliant, the first track is a duet With Willie Nelson and Toots Hibbert, it's about freedom. A brilliant combination, though they're from different ends of the spectrum, they're both creation rebles. It's made me want to check Willie's back catalogue, i hope it turns you on to toots. peace
As you suggest, The Grateful Dead, can't play, can't sing, but wonderful, tons of stuff all over the net, including nearly every performance they played, recorded for your delight. The psyhcedelic masters. Probably the biggest band on the planet. Why not try Chas n Dave. ? Find some Kevin Ayres, New Riders Of The Purple Sage , Massive Attack, Waulk Electric, Baka Beyond, Billy Bragg. A lifetimes journey of sound, enjoy.

My favorite Band has to be Jefferson Starship Grace Slick has to have them most amazing voice ever together with Paul & Marty they made an excellant band. Jefferson Starship in my mind was more influenced by the drugs, Take Blows against the Empire for example, about going for a intergalatic starship ride taking doctors, scientists etc on a cruse around the universe. They did go completely down hill when Starship arrived in the 80's what was Grace thinking ????
Oasis, yippie. Liam, Bonehead, and Tony McCaroll started the band in '92 or '93, but werent really going anywhere. Noel had been the guitar technician for Aspiral Carpets or some such band for a few years, and came back to Manchester to find that his brother started a band... Liam invited him to join, telling Noel that they needed another guitarist to make it anywhere, but Liam also knew that his brother was/is the greatest writer of pop songs in the history of music, and Liam wanted access to those songs (i 'spect he's not as dumb as he makes himself out to be ). they played a few local gigs before being spotted by a Creation Records employee, who signed them to a 6 album deal, shortly after seeing them. its also rumored that they locked that man in a room and made him listen to their demo.. their first single was "Supersonic," which initially didnt fair all that well, but eventually made it into the top 10 in the british charts. "Shakermaker" was released after that, and Oasis became the most loved band in the UK. Definitely Maybe was released in '94, and became the fastest selling debut album in British history. "Live Forever" was the last single released on the album, and the band toured extensively before heading back to the studio. "Whatever" was released as a non-album single, and (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, arguably their best album, was just about ready to be released. "Some Might Say" was chosen as the lead single and reached #1 in the UK, and made the billboard top 100 in the U.S; it was their first american chart position and first single of their's to reach #1 in britain. (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, like its predecessor (and all future albums, for that matter), debuted at number one. "roll with it" was released next, breaking the top 5 in britian and top 20 in america, and then "Wonderwall" was released as the 3rd single. it quickly reached #1 in both countries, and stayed there for almost a year. "don't look back in anger" was the 4th and last single off the album, and also reached #1 both stateside and in england. after the monster success of (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, expectations for the next lead single were, obviously, very very very high. looked back on it now "d'you know what i mean" seems rather dull (to me anyways... i dont see why so many people love it!!), but it was #1 for quite a while, and be here now stayed at the top of the charts for a few months too. "stand by me" was the second single released, and "all around the world" followed. "all around the world" became the longest ever #1 hit in england, lasting for over 9 minutes. it was, however, on the world tour for Be Here Now where Noel Gallagher started to fall apart, the brothers were fighting more than ever, and they even called the last few weeks of the tour off. Be Here Now received great reviews upon its release.... okay you know what, fuck this, i'm done.
www.boardsofcanada.com listen to beach at redpoint on this site, i just like how original they sound. i will write something about them when i can be bothered, they're from scotland and they're called boards of canda.
