    When a person prays, "Thy will be done", does that refer to some point in the future?

    i believe it just means, "may your will be done", as god knows what's best in the long run. so, "god, please help my cousin get home safely, but in the end, may your will be done".

    maybe? no? haha... meh! and ryu, he's not asking about the meaning of amen.

    peace, :)

    Missunderstanding!

    I thought, since he said 'on the end of a prayer' he meant Amen, since 'in Jesus' name Amen ' is the only thing we repeat in every prayer, and I thought 'thy will be done' was his translation for 'Amen'! :&

    Amen means I believe, if i remember correctly. It makes sense really, In Jesus Name, Amen: In Jesus Name, I believe.

    Thy will be done means that youll surrender to God, to whatever decision He mades, because you know His way is the right way.

    All very good. But . . . is "be" present tense or future tense?

    Future, as in, from this moment on.

    Thy=your
    Will=wishes
    Thy will be done=May your wishes be carried out

    I don't want to sound rude, but if you don't understand your Bible then buy one written in plain english that you can understand!

    Why people in this day buy books with 'thy' in them is beyond me, especially in America, where no one has spoken like that for centuries!

    People need to stop being so conservative about religious texts! It's just plain silly. And frankly I wouldn't be surprised if God found it offensive that people prayed to him in such a strange and unnatural manner.

    "BE" = "IS"

    Can the one who prays, in all good conscience, say, "I AM doing what you asked me to"?

    It was, after all, merely a model for prayer, That particular point being a model for confession.

    The Third Petition.

    Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

    What does this mean?--Answer.

    The good and gracious will of God is done indeed without our prayer; but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also.

    How is this done?--Answer.

    When God breaks and hinders every evil counsel and will which would not let us hallow the name of God nor let His kingdom come, such as the will of the devil, the world, and our flesh; but strengthens and keeps us steadfast in His Word and in faith unto our end. This is His gracious and good will.\

    (from dr martin luther's _small catechism_)

    ~
    & "amen" ("ameen" in aramic or arabic) means:
    so mote it be
    or
    thus it is
    or
    so be it

    mmmmkay?
    (nothing specific about "jesus" in that particular word; jews & muslims end their prayers with "amen" & they aren't christian, right?))

    personally I don't think god cares how we pray to him as long as we are praying to him and that our heart is in the right place.....we could pray to god as king salmon as long as we do it out of devotion and love

    and as far as thy will be done- it's Gods will...no matter what you think you're doing out of your decision, it is always gods will being done
