The beats came from the 50s. The hippie came from the 60s and the 70s.

True, but the hippie movement grew out of the beat movement. To me they're both anti-establishment, but the beats were much more cynical; the hippies much more idealistic. Beats = city dwellers; hippies = nature freaks. That's a pretty superficial description, but you get my drift. I consider myself a Pagan Bohemian Hippie Beatnik Chick. Wave your freak flag high, my children... :)

The thread is better suited to the "Hippies" forum and will be moved there. This really isn't an exclusively "Womyn's Issue."

If you want to stereotype then the typical beatnik wore a beret, sunglasses, a sweatshirt, jeans and sneakers, played bongo drums and hung out in coffee houses where they recited poetry and it was all cool, daddy-o. And of course the men grew goatees. They used drugs but didn't advertise it, their philosophy was fight the establishment and their main protest slogan was "Ban the bomb!"

Hippies grew their hair long, wore tie-dye or paisley, jeans with patches, beads around their necks and flowers in their hair, bare feet or sandals, smoked pot and dropped acid openly, played guitar and hung out in the sunshine where it was all far out, man! Their philosophy was peace & love and their main protest slogan was "Make love not war!"

Beyond stereotypes they were much alike, people who resisted conformity. The differences in their styles were just a reflection of the times they lived in.

Man, I remember the age of "The Original Beatniks", remember that George? Eric? That was a while ago. Like over a year! Wow, time really flies.

  8. Kerouac, Neal Cassady, william s. Burroughs = beatnick

Jerry garcia, Ken kesey, Wavy gravy = hippie

Hmm. Beatnicks seem more boring then the hippies. I don't see much except an outcry to a far out fashion in that trend. The hippies though had a total different style of life. They weren't just follow trends. :)

  11. beatniks weren't about fashion, they were about pot (no really, it's not a joke), non-violence, beatniks tended to be more literary, they also were very about travel whereas that is a trimming in hippie culture, a great many things that are assumed in a hippie society were stated and basis in beatnik culture, I sometimes wonder if I'm not more of a beatnik than a hippie.
