I've heard all kindsa stuff about this. Just wondering what you guys have to say. I'm pregnant right now, and I tend to be one of those spontaneous people who just get something done on a whim. I'm not going to do anything if there's even a chance it's going to hurt my baby. There were some people who I used to work with who were saying all different kindsa stuff about this. I could maybe understand tatoos....but what about percings?

if they can see that you are pregnant most shops will not do it! I got the SUBLIME one on my back before I knew I was pregnant with my son and it didnt hurt him a bit. i am not sure the reasoning behind this tho, guess I outta look into it cuz I have gotten peirced while pregnant too and it never did any harm............ i guess maybe the chance of infections or something...................................

yeah, it's the whole infection thing that I would be worried about. I just want everything to be ok. I mean, I can wait to get the tatoo after the baby comes, but if i make one of those out of the blue decisions that I want to get something, I want to know wether or not I'll hurt the baby. I'm going to ask my doc on thursday.

There are many reasons why its not a good idea to get poked or inked while pregnant... the infection thing is a big part of it yes but the BIG HUGE thing about getting tattoed while pregnant is that most shops use ink that is made from shellfish... shellfish and pregnant women tend to not mix well... also keep in mind your body is changing and keeping a little one alive its got alot going on why add the healing process of a self inflicted wound to the list...

yeah, my hubby never tattoos anyone pregnant - or even anyone that's obviously sick. you have to consider it an open wound - not a good thing when pregnant.

just be patient, you'll get over being pregnant soon enough.

And home made tattoo's - isn't there a hepititas risk? I mean if you're using shared ink or needles, or even an improperly sterilized gun? I can't imagine that risk in a shop, but it pays to be careful!

here's a site with info on what some inks are made of:

    http://chemistry.about.com/library/weekly/aa121602a.htm

and basically the truth of the matter is

    "What Are Tattoo Inks?
The short answer to the question is: You can't be 100% certain! Manufacturers of inks and pigments are not required to reveal the contents."

piercings might not be bad, but not body ones and definately not your belly button or genitals. Ears and nose should, in theory, be fine if you make sure you take REALLY good care of it.

i have to agree that piercing and tattooing during pregnancy isn't a good idea for fear of getting an infection and like someone already stated your body is going through a hell of a lot to sustain the life that is growing inside, so there really isn't any need to further stress it out with that. just wait it out, you'll only be pregnant for a short time. i feel you though... i wanted to get a tattoo last summer but found out that i was pregnant.... so much for that but my pregnancy is almost over.... any day now!!!!! ;)

I'm glad. I know some young, money challenged people who are into the homemade stuff and not only do I worry about their health, I feel bad about the quality. These tattoo's are the kind that are regretted when older and wiser.

I agree with the whole "wait until after your pregnant" thingy, there's no rush and no need to overload your body with experiences, it is having the experience and time of it's life right now.

In terms of the homemade tattoos stuff I am not so in aggreement though. My tattoo was done by a girl who was highly trained with years of experience and lots of reccomendations and good original flashs..she had built her own portable tattoo kit and autoclaved the gear (number one most important thing) at her friends piercing place who had an autoclave...so mine was done at home, therefore is home made, but in no way was any more risky than going to a tattoo studio, and maybe even more special because of the experience.

Stephanie, your homemade tattoo sounds like it was done by a true professional without a shop, what I was referring to is inexperienced people (shakey lines!) with no real sterilization equipment and a small supply of ink being reused.

I'd love to see some pictures!

I think you're smart. And then you could get one to symbolize the joyous occasion!

My bf(the proud papa) and I both want to get a matching one of our baby. It's not like it's a couple tatoo that we'll regret one day, it's our baby. I think it'll be cute. Since it's so hard (and costly) to find people to do portrates, we were just thinking of getting a precious moments baby with the name and birthdate...or maybe the horoscope sign. Not too sure yet. My bf has lots of tatoos already, and can't wait for this one.
But I'm planning on having lots of kids............better leave room, lol.

I like that idea. Me and my sig other have matching but not the same frogs in the same spot on our legs. I'll take a pic and post it in a minute. Hang on - so fun to be at home to day!
