    Last night i restarted my computer and my slave harddrive decided it didnt want to work anymore. Whenever i try to load it up it goes as far as the boot screen then a blue screen with white writing on it flashes then my computer restarts. I changed my hdd's so that the working one is slave and the non-working one is master. On the damaged hdd i have 2 user profiles my own one and one named visitor. I can get into the visitor account no problem because its not password protected but my own profile is protected with a password. Is there any way i can log into this account without loading up that hdd or is there anyway i can remove the password so i can get to my files before i format the hdd?

    What's your operating system? And why don't you know your password any more or why aren't you able to log on your account? What happens if you try to log in the protected account?

    Im on xp (forgot to mention that lol). I still know my password but i cant get to the login screen to enter it so im trying to access it by loading up my other harddrive then accessing the files of this one through f:\documents and settings\paul\...... but when i try to access the file named paul (my files) it comes up access denied. I know this comes up because i need to log into that account to view those files. But i cant log in and i really need to get to those files to save myself from hours of downloading again lol.

    That same thing happened to me when I cleaned my computer with the ant-virus for the first time;
    are you sure you haven't deleted something?

    It might be the same for you, I rescued it all by getting in Safe Mode and then use the System Resotore or whatever that's called in English.

    This helped me, I hope it helps you, too.

    I cant even get it to load in safe mode :(. It all started last night i was online trying to get a mixing program but coz im on dial-up i get cut off every 2 hours so i needed a download manager. I downloaded one and installed it then had to reboot. I rebooted then my modem stopped working so i rebooted again and my computer started to restart itself after the boot screen dissapeared. A virus is the most likely cause but my virus definitions where updated yesterday. Im gonna format the hdd anyway but i just hoped there might have been a way i could access my folder so i could get out some setup files for some of my hardware which i had to download. I think ive found a .sam file in my sys32 folder called Imhosts could this be the file with my password inside and if i deleted this file would i be able to access the folder? or alternativly could i edit this file so i can simply delete the password?

    Do not try to delete the sam-file, you would never again get access to your files ;)

    Did you remember to change the JUMPERS on them? Also, the cabling does make a difference. It has to be right.

    how exactly is windows starting up? right into the visitor account?

    try going to user accounts in the control panel (start>settings>control panel)

    check what accounts are available, and also, check the settings of how users login, or something like that
