Okay, I'm a tiny girl, I should say that right off the bat. 5'3" weight varies from 90-100 lbs. Body fat count is 4%. I also have a very high metabolism... hence why I stay tiny even when I eat a good amount of junk food mixed in with my healthy stuff. And I've had a miscarriage before.

Anyways, when I'm done with vet school I want to start having a family. Would have been married for 4 years, living with the guy for 6, and known him for 8 (yeah yeah, just met the guy this year and we already have this planned.)

However I'm worried. First I've heard that miscarriages can lessen the chance of getting pregnant. Is that true?

More importantly though, and I'm basing this off of knowledge I have about animals, I don't have enough body fat to actually carry a baby to full term, do I? I know this is far in advance, but I probably should start working on it now, what do I need to do in order to carry a baby full term and not become emanciated because of my size?

When i got pregnant... i weighed 95lbs... im prolly 5'6" and i am really tiny with the fast metabolism too.... i know that people kept telling me i was too skinny when i got preg but i was eating well and didn't think anything was wrong. but i am now around 115 lbs, 23 wks preg, and the baby is doing really well.
with that being said... i don't know anything about the risk factor but i am just letting you know that it is working out for me, my baby boy is developing nicely and i am eating like i am suppose to and letting nature do its thing.
i don't know if that rambling helped or not but i tried!
    good luck to you

I've had two miscarriages. My first pregnancy was a miscarriage, my second pregnancy I gave birth to my oldest son, my third pregnancy was another miscarriage, and my fourth pregnancy I gave birth to twins, a son and a daughter. :)

I've known many, many, many women who have had a miscarriage that have gone on to have healthy pregnancies. I'm one of them as well. :)

As far as weight goes, as long as you're taking care of yourself and eating properly, you should be just fine. :)

    Good luck!

Thanks both of you for all the advice you have given me. Once my boyfriend and I start getting ready to have a family I'll probably end up asking for more advice. But really, thanks a lot.

A women's body goes through a lot of changes during pregnancy. If your fast metabolism is of a natural kind... then your body will probably adjust to the pregnancy. But if it is from a disease (i.e. malfunktion of the thyroid gland) then it might be different. But after all, life finds its way :)

And don't worry about the miscariages. Most women who had one are able to have healthy children. My mom had one, and gave birth to four of us! (And we're all totally healthy!)

Good Luck with your family planning :)

I guess the main reason that we worry is because things with my thyroid are strange. The TSH level is at 0.25 when it's supposed to be between 0.7-6.0, but the iodine test showed normal activity. My metabolism is a mystery to them.

I don't know... I've been tested for diabetes, thyroid disorders, and anemia... always it seems like I might have it... but I never do. My body is screwed up that way. Hence, part of the worry

First of all, you have to stop thinking of your body being screwed up! Your body works just fine.

About 1/3 of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, with the new early testing, we just know about them more aften, where as 15 years ago we would just pass it off as a late period.

Now, if your worried about your body fat, if you are naturally slim, and not starving yourself, you have nothing to worry about. Using olive oil, eating avocado, adding a bit of mayo to your diet is all you need to do to increase your dietary fat.

Supplement with folic acid (which ALL women of childbearing age should do anyway!)

When the time comes you, and your baby, will be fine.

when you get pregnant your body will let you know when to eat and what to eat. you can't plan that. At least I think...when you get pregnant you will like and dislike things differently then what you do now. I was very tiny too when I got pregnant and I thought how the fk am I going to have a baby??? and it works out just fine

Thanks guys... I'm just the type of girl who worries easily. Case in point... my boyfriend is in the Army (hasn't even gone to Basic so he can't be shipped out yet) and his unit is being deployed... and I started to worry.
