Just got an old, cheap laptop and I'm trying to install Linux. Every site I go to in an attempt to DL it directs me to a similar page with lists of .txt files of various names and sizes. I'm looking to DL Linux to my desktop PC and transfer it by CD. Any suggestions you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

probablylooking for a iso, i'd reccommend searching for a .torrent for it.

Tell me which distribution you want, and I'll give you the URL to the file you want. I'd also consider FreeBSD if I were you.

Free BSD isn't exactly for someone with minimal *nix experience. I'd say try mandrake, knoppix, or something user-friendly along those lines if you've never tried linux before.

http://linuxiso.org/ has all the ISOs you need, go to the mirrors part after you select a distro and then grab them from the FTP links. Or if you can do BT then grab a torrent if there's one around.

Instructions for burning and all that are on linuxiso.

I don't know, I found FreeBSD to be very friendly to me when I was a beginner (I make it sound like it was more than 3 months ago, and as though I am no longer a beginner :p). The fact that it's actually one solid system rather than a collection of modules really helps.

    They are all here: http://distrowatch.com/

Or you can order the CDs from eBay and other online dealers for about $5.

You should try Fedora Core 3 (or Core 4 which will be out soon). It's VERY user-friendly.
