Are there any other Phish fans here? I don't really know how big of a band they are, a buddy of mine at school introduced me to them when I first got into rock music and I think they're awesome. They have a sound sort of similar to Pink Floyd but not quite. It's just a unique style of music and I love it. My favorite songs are 46 Days, Character Zero, and Free. Marijuana is also a funny song.
Hah... they started the 90s jam-band movement when the dead were coming to a halt... then they started getting really big post-'94 and around 95 after Jerry died... I really don't think Trey is as bad a guy as people make him out to be... it's kind of like yoko and the beatles... he's a great guitarist... I like Mike's sense of humor, haha, but it seems like a lot of people don't get him. I love their stuff, but I've kinda moved on since they broke up last year and the whole coventry incidents... There's other greats in the jam scene... Keller Williams (haha, I even added him to wikipedia a couple days ago), String Cheese Incident, moe., Yonder Mountain String Band, Dark Star Orchestra, New Monsoon, Umphrey's McGee, Michael Franti, Spearhead, Gov't Mule, Allman Brothers, Derek Trucks Band, Hot Tuna, Leftover Salmon etc...
Phish is amazing, but you'll probably see soon enough that alot of ppl like to rip on phish and trey cuz they think its the cool thing to do. Quite simply they are amazing trey is one of the sickest guitarists there is and mike and page are super nasty and fishman is fishman. Check out some of their epic songs like the divided sky, you enjoy myself, harry hood, mikes groove (mikes song-i am hydrogen-weeakpau groove). They formed in 83, but Phish as we know them started in about 86 i think. They are simply amazing, one of my favorite bands. Orinso2 alot of those bands u mentioned really arnt on the same level as Phish. And also who is New Monsoon? im goin to a concert that there gonna be playing in(Im seeing the concert for SCI, Umphrey, YOnder, and Keller) but ive never heard of new monsoon so please fill me in.
New Monsoon is a newer band... they're actually in the Jammy's already... They're also playing with SCI, YMSB, UM, and K-Dub on the Big Summer Classic tour this Summer. And no, none of those bands are like phish... they're all on a different spectrum and unique to each other.
I just love their unique sounds, I mean its just calming to listen to. When I first heard of them it was like NOBODY knew who they were, and its so weird because according to my friend (he adores them) they're one of the greatest bands, and I agree with him.
I advise everyone to check out the range that they are capable of. Grab a good SBD and just enjoy. Plenty of transcendant moments out there to catch. Some of my best experiences have been because of Phish and at Phish shows. Nothing quite like ringing in the millenium with 80,000 like-minded friends in the Everglades. For newbie friendly listening I suggest classicly rated (or overrated if you will!) shows such as 4/16/92, 12/7/97, 2/28/03, and 11/17/97. All famous and I'm sure any hardcores like me would argue about what to suggest till they come back from Hiatus 2, but those are great starting points, as are several others. If anyone needs any CDs of live shows feel free to drop me a line for a free bomb, I've got over 1000 shows and may just have that gem you're looking for, as well as many bootleg videos on DVD. Also check bt.etree.org for torrents of Phish that are flowing like Niagra Falls. "Nothing I see can be taken from me"
I've heard from several sources that they've all gotten together at the Barn for a jam or two. In a number of years I imagine they may be back. Best to stay positive about the whole thing. Some people weren't very happy with post-hiatus Phish, and weren't feeling it. I personally thought it was great, and if they just play new songs I'd lap it up. Those four guys just need to be on stage together, and Trey may yet realize the passion again some day. Too much positive energy in the whole experience to walk away forever, despite whatever words have been said.
Yeah, I was going to see Trey with his own band in Richmond in three days, but I just wasn't feeling it... It just won't feel right without mike, page, and fish being there.
Also there is no Phish song called "Marijuana". For some reason on file-sharing networks this is a very popular name for some "Phish" song, but it's not right. My guess, although never hearing it, is that it may be Makisupa Policeman. Although I have a suspicion that it very well could be a tune that isn't even done by Phish, or has ever been played by Phish. That sort of thing happens on Kazaa, etc. Much like a "Gin and Juice" "cover" by Phish showed up on Napster in the late 90s. Just a random mistake that became widespread.
Hmm, it sounds very much like them though.... maybe I can find out who it is if I google the lyrics that I remember.
The reason Gin and Juice had the artist as "phish" was because a rapper name phish covered the snoop dogg song, I believe, but that bluegrass version was done by the gourds...
You are correct sir! I was one of the people who grabbed the Napster track back in the day and sent in info to the phish.net FAQ about it. I think that was during the Summer of Covers in 98 when they played Sabotage and many other covers. Actually I think it was after the fall and Hampton when they covered Gettin Jiggy With It. Maybe very early 99? So people just thought to themselves that it could be true. But if you listen to the Gourd's version it's pretty obvious it's nothing like Phish, (other than being a bluegrass tune I suppose), and none of the vocals could be anyone in Phish. Not even from the spectacular range of Gordo who can go all the way up in Emotional Rescue.
Yes we've already established that. I'm trying to find out if it is by another artist or if it is a Phish song under a different name.
