I don't really have definant plans for the future. Of course, there are things that I definantly want to do in my life, such as spend some time out of the USA and have my own business, these goals are not top priority in my life. I don't want to be a business owner as my chief "profession". It's just a side thing I want to do. I want most of all, to have a family. I guess, as far as school goes, I don't have things as in order as a lot of people, but I'd rather be a mother than anything else.
I consider Green Day to be worse than Good Charlotte, because if it wasn't for the success of Green Day, Good Charlotte and all those sound-alike bands would never have gotten big or famous, let alone be allowed to keep making "music". Oh yeah, that article... I bookmarked that a while ago, I'll read it now
blues and folk, thats where its at... hell, even some country... just to find people to play with. thats my goal.
about 10 years ago i was with a band that had been playing up and down between toronto and nashville fo 4 years or so. at any rate, we had gained enouhg attention to be sponsored by "good times" magizine (out of manhatten) to play canadian music week. we did 2 showcases there and came away with an appointment to meet with the rep from black rose publishing in new york. a week after cmw, we made the trip to ny and everything seemed great. they gave us the grand tour of their facility, very nice by the way. after the tour, the rep takes us in to meet his boss. this is where things get weird. this guy in his far out office with the water fall in the corner puts our cd in. he plays through about 20 or 30 seconds of 2 or 3 songs. he's tapping his foot and bobbing his head. well, needless to say, these 5 rednecks from a little town in maryland (us) are tripping happy. well, he staops the disc and says "sounds good guys, i think we can work with this." again, we are tripping. but then he says "buit i never decide anything without consulting the wizard" so we are alike...what the fuck? he turns around and grabs one of those wizards that's like one of those magic 8 ball kinda things. and he says "for example, wizard, should mr. batista (the rep)remove his pants for these young men?" well, we are looking at each other like...hummm and mr. batista is sweating like he's been through this before. luckly the wizzard says no. so he asks the wizard if he should work with us. the wizard says somethng about "it's not out of the question " we leave with a number for the boss and a return appointment. maybe we should have gone back, but at that point, i realalized that i'd rather make great records on my own and never have major "money or fame" than hang my work on what "the wiz" decides. kooks man. this is just a personal thing, to those of you with majr label asperations, more power to ya and good luck!
Yeah, it isn't that difficult to do. To tell you the truth, if I HAD to listen to anything that is pop-punk, I'd probably rather listen to Green Day than anything else...
Gig until the money ran out. A couple of the most talented guitar players I have ever heard have never even come close to signing record deals. One of them has released a couple of self-financed cd's, but the other one, who is truly a virtuoso, hasn't even done that. There are a million great players who never make a dime, and almost as many tone deaf MBA's who've made a fortune with vapid 'music' recordings. In my view The Spice Girls, and Pet Shop Boys are two examples, though PSB's have a tiny speck of talent for lyrics. The lead violin and flautist who play for Yanni are unreal, I think their names are Karen Briggs and Pedro Eustache. I watched the two of them the whole time I was at his live show a few years ago. According to Huey Lewis there are only two kinds of music, good music and bad music. I agree, I like any kind of music, no matter the genre, but my faves are blues and rock.
Agreed! The drummer from the Live at the Acropolis set (Charlie Adams?) was pretty amazing, too... I don't know if he's still with Yanni though.
Yeah, yanni has some great musicians with him that most people haven't even heard of... he's also pretty underrated. I always wonder why guys like Tommy Emmanuel, Leo Kottke, or Eric Johnson are fairly underrated.
if u want to write songs then make yourself as uncomfortable as possible. or fall in love if u want to write love songs, if u want to write depressive songs, fall out of love. good luck with the song writing and peace out
i just dont see the point of doing anything in life unless -something- you do is being recognised. and for the record, i think the spice girls were one of the best girl pop groups of my generation. theyre corny and superficial.. but their tracks arent half bad compared to a heap of other shit that is on mtv but yeh all those great players whop never write or record or anything.. its just like... why play at all? imo ie.
Becuase they do it for personal satisfaction? Becuase it offers them an outlet for their feelings/emotions? Deeply personal emotions they may not necassarily wish to share? Art doesn't need to be shown off to make it worthwhile. Just a thought... I'm very hesitant to show people things I write becuase it makes me feel very exposed and vulnerable (not all the time obviously, but somethings i write are for my eyes only). Artists who work purely for the praise and recognition of others are missing the point.
well yer evidently that what some think. but for me, i have never made a piece of art that ive wanted to keep to myself. unless it was bad an embarrassing but thats a different issue i dont need to show myself my expression. for me, art is all about connecting with an audience. the audience could be one other special person or the whole world. if the world will like it, then ill show it to the world. if no one will like it then it means im a bad artist which is what i personally try to stay away from duh lol
Fair enough, each to their own I was just saying there are valid reasons why some people don't like to share. I can also see your point though, there are definetely times where i work with a specific person or audience in mind. And people appreciating your work is always nice
