Anyone else besides me think this is a bit screwed up? I mean she's 5, all kids throw tantrums, if the school can't handle one 5 year old throwing a tantrum what the hell are they doing trying to teach an entire school full of them? And the parents really need to teach their kids how to behave in school.

Isn't it? I mean she's only 5 years old. I've seen tons of kids that age throw a tantrum, and if you don't do anything to correct them of course they're going to think they can do it in school and other public places.

They should have handled this kid the way they normally handle disruptive kids at this school. They could have easily put her in a room by herself until she calmed down and a parent arrived

Oh for crying out loud. Arresting a 5 year old for a tantrum?! What the hell?! Kids do that, and I'm sure that little girl really was provoked with all of that negative attention around her. She was probably scared and lashing out even moreso. That really pisses me off. You mean they couldn't control a 5 year old little child? Come on. That's ridiculous.

I have a 5 year old son who, on occassion, will throw tantrums. Nothing too serious because he knows that kind of behavior is unexceptable, but the fact of the matter is that many young children do have tantrums, some more than others, but it's not something abnormal for a child in that stage in development to be doing. They are simply asserting their independence and seeing how far they can get, or sometimes, it can be due to a lack of sleep, hunger, fear, or just plain anger because they can't get what they want. They gradually grow out of it as they mature and understand more of what is, and what is not, an acceptable way of behaving when things don't go their way. It takes a lot of love, patience, and guidance.

The treatment of this little girl was outrageous. It's appalling how the school was not able to handle a 5 year old child on their own without calling the authorities. Imagine how scared she must have been! No wonder she was freaking out! I feel sorry for her. :(

I realize that some children indeed have behavioral problems, and I don't know the child's particular background or history of behavior, but I do know if you look in any child-rearing book, you'll find that tantrums are not abnormal for that age. To arrest a young child for having one is ridiculous and uncalled for.

Have you guys seen the video of the girl? I would have cuffed her myself. She was punching the asst. Principal and throwing things. I understand that it's easy to control a 5 year old throwing a tantrum when it is your own home, but there are legalities that must be taken into consideration when in school. If they hadn't cuffed her, the mom would have still sued for restraining the girl in any other fashion. The child has anger problems obviously and maybe they scared her shitless enough to straighten up.

I just saw this black girl get handcuffed on TV a minute ago.
    She was outrageously bad behaved.
I blame the parents and how she was brought up.
Failing that she has an anti-social disorder and therefore
should not have been restrained like that.

I too hate the ever increasing police-state we seem to be in, how could I not do so?

But I've talked to some teachers about this, and other situations like it.

First off it's important to note that she was not arrested! The police showed up and put her in handcuffs. Then she sat around and was told what she did wrong and they took the handcuffs off. She is not "charged" with anything.

Also from what my teacher friends tell me in their district they are required to report assault to the police. If they don't do so they can lose their jobs or face disciplinary action. This was all on tape, and the assistant principle showed up as well. If the regulations are the same there as in friend's districts then it was a requirement that they call the police at a certain point instead of trying to restrain the child themself in a more physical manner than they had already attempted. If they had gotten at all rough with this young girl it is possible that they could've been sued. My friends state that this is something that they very much have to worry about, even with young children surprisingly enough as many have behavioral problems and will become very violent.

So I do think this is a sad situation, and yes a little girl should be able to be controlled without the police getting involved. I'd hope that this would never have to happen. But if it is the case that the school authorities felt that they could not act physically to restrain the young girl, (who was on video as part of a class project), without fear of a lawsuit or some kind of disciplinary action, then calling in the police to do things by the book and perhaps make her realize that she has to listen to her teachers... well that may be what they had to do.

I wish it was not like that, teachers are in fear of their every action being used against them, this is very much true. Teachers are increasingly being taught that they need to watch their backs, and if they had held the girl down, or tried something to get her to start behaving that was at all objectionable, or could be viewed that way, then they could be in trouble and they could be in the news right now.

"Assistant principle holds screaming 5 year old down against regulations, Lawsuit in progress!"

Of course you should be able to deal with a tantrum, of course. This is not a good situation and it is fucked up. But they very well could've had their hands tied so to speak. A few minutes, or however long it was, in handcuffs is not the worst thing in the world. If you've been checking the news you'll see that in FL they have increasingly been using the TASER on children, of very young ages. Now that is something to be angry about, a few minutes in handcuffs is not the end of the world.

The real problem here is that this little girl was, according to the mother, looking to be transferred as she had a "problem" with the assistant principle. Now what kind of problem could a 5 year old have with someone like that? I think there may very well be some major parental problems here. I'm not saying there are, but I know what my kindergarten classes were like, and all the ones that I saw. No one would've ever hit the teacher. Not in kindergarten, not causing a scene like that. Kids misbehaved but this sort of episode, as I've seen in the video, is pretty severe. She also had a history of being very problematic according to the teachers.

I'm not saying it's the mother's fault, I don't know enough obviously, but this child may very well need some help.

It may not be 100% the parents fault here, although I
personally too can't help thinking that this black girl is
a result of this. She may have a personality disorder
thats deeply rooted and needs special help.

Wow...I just watched those videos of that little girl...and ok, yeah she was annoying and not cooperating...but she wasn't SO bad that they had to bring in the fucking police and handcuff her! They couldn't just keep her there until her mother came and handled her herself? Wow...police arresting 5-year-olds...and yet, there are criminals who need to be locked up running loose out there. Kinda fucked up, I'd say.

She wasn't arrested, period. Since the school didn't want to be sued for restraining the child, they called the police who then handcuffed her and had her sit in the back of a squad car until her mom arived, at which point she was released. She WAS NOT arrested.

If my child had to be handcuffed at school, you'd bet I'd be thanking the police... and I'd make sure my child would be so scarred that he/she wouldn't even attempt to do it again.
