Pop-country is pretty bad. But check out what's known as "alt-country".

This was pretty big in the late 80's. I suggest Steve Earle as a starting point. He's been turning out great country music for the last 15 or so years. Not the same as his country stuff, but check out his bluegrass album with the McCourys. The Mountain.

Also Willie Nelson has continued to plug away and churn out good music his entire life.

So check out the underground of country music, there's tons of great stuff out there.

I think even before MTV started to kill off good rock, cause I mean when Johnny Cash starts to come out with new albums, and the music video is being played on MTV and VH1 and some more mainstream radio stations but CMT and Nashville is just ignoring Johnny Cash, then, well this is what happens:

Haha...I did a talent show to that song. :D :(

George, don't be disheartened. You stick with your Chet Atkins and Johnny Cash. They're a mighty fine place to be. ;)

Yeah, I play a folk and bluegrass festival every October, usually...

But, this Redneck Woman shit is pissing me off...

As far as alt country goes, that's the only country stuff I can even tolerate... http://www.uncleshaker.us

That's probably the best indie/alt-country/folk band I know of.

My modern favorite has to be John Hiatt... He's a little of everything. Lyle Lovett is good... mostly songwriters.

I like to think that good country became un-mainstreamed when Garth Brooks came around.

I'm not really to up-to-date on country, but my parents have some tolerable albums from the mid 80s... before Garth Brooks became famous.

pretty much all types of music have been killed by the industry. poor artists cant really make money off of other poor artists, and the pop culture is sold on pop music, be it any genre. but damn it makes for some good song writin inspiration. they say you cant sing the blues until youve felt them. remeber the opry hated hank williams.

Yeah, haha... seems like the people who call the shots generally don't like good "musician's musician" kind of music because it isn't marketable to people who don't go very deep into it.
