There have been three twisters in Kansas over the past two days.....and i'm very worried about Wakarusa....think about 50 thousand person tent city....boom...a tornado hits....there would be pure chaos.....where are you to go?!? the only safe place in a tornado is underground...and i highly doubt there will be 50,000 person bomb shelter.......but does anyone know of some fact...like " oh, there will be no tornados at wakarusa because its on the border of kansas which does not have the proper environment...." because the whole situation of tornados and 50,000 person tent city = disaster.....
" oh, there will be no tornados at wakarusa because its on the border of kansas which does not have the proper environment...." First, that is crap. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about tornadoes. Worry about the probably above 100 degree heat that will happen that time of year. Why do people not from Kansas always have this weird Wizard of Oz tornado stigma?? I think you are more likely to be harmed from the heat than see a tornado. Yes there could be tornadoes, but it is unlikely. And it will only happen if there is a bad thunderstorm and conditions are just right. Also, if you are outside with no available tornado shelter, the best place to be is to get down flat in a ditch or low lying area. Stay away from water, trees, metal objects (lightning). Don't get in your car and try to out run it.
yea that is some good advice thats like a weather man answer haha thats what they tell you when there is a warning or watch. but thats exactly what i would do if i were outside.
If we all lived our lives worrying about possiblitities we'd never do anything fun...but I appreciate your concern....love always
50,000 sounds like a mighty big estimate for Wakarusa. I'd guess between 20 and 30K. Either way, I think the tornado to fun ratio will be heavily weighted on the side of fun
in reality there are only a couple days a year(if that) that a twister will actually touch down. A more realistic worry that time of year is a supercell(severe) storm will produce large hail or strong flatwinds. I still would go to the fest rather than worry about it.
okay......... where do I start with this one?? first of all, you are wrong about the only safe place is underground. you can lie in a ditch and be fine. dont worry about tornadoes. Ive lived here for 30 years and yet havent witnessed a tornado. a couple twisters in kansas is no big deal...... there are alot of them which touch ground for a couple of seconds and create no havoc....... maybe destroy an old barn or chicken coop, big deal. last year at wakarusa, though, we went through a hell of a storm on thursday night...... the winds were probably 60-70 mph...... our tent didnt fall though..... just was kinda scary though...... alot of lightning, wind and rain. so many people ended up with soaked tents. once again, dont worry about twisters, its not like you see them every day.
umm I dont know what to say about this statement. there are tornadoes not only in kansas but all around this area. tornadoes are caused by cold air colliding with warm air...... usually the cold air comes from the rockies and warm air up from the gulf of mexico. Id say texas and oklahoma see more twisters than kansas. but you see them all up through here, missouri, iowa, nebraska, illinois, blah blah........... you even see them down south in alabama, tenn, georgia, florida......... fuck, even in the northeast and upper midwest. its not only in kansas for fucks sake. I still want to know what you mean about proper environment?? lawrence isnt on the border either, we are 30 miles from missouri.
i really have no idea......i've only been in hurricanes which are much more insane....and what i ment by proper environment is, certain kinds of storms require a certain climate to form...an obvious example: it must be cold to snow......etc....so since i've never been to kansas, and my whole thread was prompted by my paranoid friend (which in turn made me paranoid.....) and her fear of tornados, i wondered if maybe where the festival is being held, by some chance it was in a geographicaly perfect spot, to be missed by tornados...or that area where the festival is held is in a different part of kansas....kinda like how northern california is nothing like southern california, weather and people....(but thats a whole different story)........and the border thing, i don't know kansas....
anyone who was at Summer Camp knows all about tornadoes and festivals!! They're used to twisters down there, they'll be able to evacuate people before it's too late.
