Im really into it though Im a newbie and still kinda suck ;) lol
But hopefully I'll be going out to get my own sewing machine tomorrow and some fabric and see what I can do with it...
Any tips on how to get started?

FunkyPhreshMama, if even you messed up in the beginning I think there's still some hope for me! :) I saw some of ur work in other threads, and I absolutely love everything.. You are an amazing artist! :)

On a side note I got myself a Singer today, but Im having a hard time with it so far.. lol Im just a bit too dumb for machines, but alas I'll figure it out (hopefully)

Thanks for the encouragement Cre and Supermommy, I wont give up! :)

A lot of folks don't like to use patterns, but I found that using patterns helped me to learn the basic shapes of the pieces and how to do things like darts and hems. Then it was easier to make my own, but I still use them sometimes. I also found an old sewing book from the 70s. I bought it at a yard sale and it has really helped me figure out how to make more complicated things. Good luck!

yeah, learning to sew means you learn alot about patience. i found that theres a groove you can into, and it you really arent into sewing you tend to fuck up. i self teach myself because im still learning more and more each day.
there will be times when you are gonna want to throw your machine out the window (well not really, but you end up frustrated) just take a deep breath, light some nag, put on some bob marley and try to find your groove. good luck in your sewing ventures

im self taught...and still making mistakes!! start simple...how bout trying a groovy bag? just make up the shell and the rest is decoration! i like using patterns, my own or bought ones...they just help me visualise things and "find your groove".
how about using one of your favourite skirts to make up a pattern...thats wat i did, i just cut up bits of newspaper in a pattern using the panels of fabric from the skirt, but remember to leave room around the edge for a seam!!!:) that was one of my first (and more silly) mistakes! good luck and happy sewing...oxo
