We have begun Potty Learning with Dakota. But when he feels himself start to pee in the potty he gets freaked out. He jumps up and cries and acts like he's afraid to pee in the potty. I don't know how we're gonna get him to use the potty if he is afraid of it. He will sit on the potty while I shower in the morning and to brush his teeth at night. But that's all he wants to use it for. We have never punished him for peeing anywhere so I don't know where this is coming from. Kathi
How about if he pees while standing in the shower? He won't do it forever, but he can see what he's doing and it doesn't sound so scary.
my son is only 2 months, so i have no experience with this subject yet, but my mom told me that when i was little and potty training, i would pee in the toilet but not poop, because it scared me. i would cry and so i didn't end up being fully potty trained until i was 3 or so, because my mom wasn't going to make me do something that scared me, even though no one knows WHY i was afraid. But i eventually got over it, and no, i'm not scared to poop in the potty anymore
Dakota does not get time-outs on the potty. He gets time-outs on the couch. The only thing he does on the potty is to wait for mommy to shower or to sit and brush his teeth. We bought stickers yesterday. We're going to start giving him stickers when he correctly uses the potty. Also, he has let us know that the appropriate way to use the potty is to stand in front of it like Daddy does. Whatever works. Next week I'm taking a few days off work. I plan to switch him to pants and try it while I have several days to stay home with him. I think the back and forth or pants and diapers is confusing. Kathi
Perhaps Dakota is afraid that what is coming out of him is part of himself that he is "losing". Does he get the chance to see mommy and daddy use the potty ?Also , maybe he is afraid of the flushing noise ? After all, most kids don't pay attention to what happens to their dirty diaper after it is removed.Maybe he just needs to know that it will help make room in his body when he gets hungry again. The best piece of advice I got when my daughter Moira was potty training I will pass on. NAKED TIME and plenty of it.Even outside with just socks & sneaks. That way when his feet get wet (or his favorite toy) you can gently remind him that going on the potty will keep everything nice and dry. Good luck !
