Hi everyone! I Just decided to be a vegetarian yesterday. I never liked red meat ( the taste, texture, or the way it still seems to bleed when you open the package....gross), and now I have even better reasons to not eat ANY animals at all. Once you learn the facts you can't turn back. There is no way I could ever eat an animal again after seeing what goes on in the factory farms.

I am wondering why I ever questioned vegetarianism before? How could I consider myself an animal lover and then turn around and eat them?

I have reached a turning point in my life and keep finding even more reasons to be vegetarian and maybe someday vegan.

I hope to be talkin to all of you soon!

    Peace and Love
    Twila

Yay! Welcome...I remember how it was when I first decided to be vegetarian and it was exactly how you wrote it. I've been a vegetarian for 10 years now (I did fall off the wagon once and ate chicken and fish) and a vegan for 7 months. You can do it, just remember to keep remembering the reasons why you became one because it can be easy to forget especially if you eat out and there aren't alot of vegetarian options and if you hang out with people that eat meat. There's nothing wrong with that but don't let them sway you, stay strong!

i know exactly what you mean. i never TRUELY liked meat, but its what my parents bought and thats all there was i thought. i would always avoid certain parts of bacon though, and peel off the corners and certain parts of lunch meat and spit out certain pieces of hamburger, and never eat leftover meat. i also remember as a kid my parents gave me milk and i asked if it was a cow and that idea seemed totally weird to me and i just couldnt fathom enjoying drinking something that came from a cow, then they lied and said it wasnt cow milk and i started to drink it. dunno why they lied, guess they thought milk was healthy.

and i agree 100%, dont see how anyone could eat meat after educating themselves about it, and i dont ever see myself turning back for any reason except survival possibly in a really extreme case, but thats really unlikely...fasting is probably healthier and more reasonable in that case cause it would keep me more alert...

    (end quote)

Don't you think that's a bit strong? Are you saying that no meat eater has educated himself about meat?

I think she's saying that she doesn't see how anyone could eat meat after educating themselves about it, not that meat eaters don't educate themselves. Also, I could be wrong but I think it was about educating themselves about the cruelty of animals and how anyone can still eat meat after learning the facts is pretty unbelievable. But she never said that it doesn't happen like that.
In my opinion, I agree, but humans tend to choose ignorance about many things even when they have glimpsed the facts because it is easier...not trying to start any arguments here, just an observation on my part.

I agree, I seems like most people just eat meat because their parents thaught them so. I'm not saying thats everybody, but most people I know.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to congratulate myself on my first week of being absolutley meat free! And I've also cut way back on dairy, I've only had two bowls of dairy ice cream (which is easy to switch to soy ice cream cause gods know I can't live without my chocolate ice cream!) When my family was having dinner last night I kinda missed the chicken but I got through it without any problem.

I feel great! This has been a really easy week compared to what I thought it would be. I know there are challenges coming up though (like BBQs, and family gatherings) but this week has given me the confidence that I can do it! It's great to have this forum here for support since I don't know any other veggies. :D

    Peace and Love

Wonderful! You sound like you've got what it takes. Good luck on your upcoming challenges... you can always run back here if you find yourself in a "BBQ crisis" [IMG] Yeah, it's tough when you're sitting at a table with all the temptations & smells. But it helps to imagine how the animal looked when it was alive... then your common sense & discipline will kick in. Congratulations again. What you've done is no small feat. Treat yourself to double scoops of soy ice cream! mmmm

i recently had a veggie burger on the grill that had been brushed with this special home-made bbq sauce, and WOW it was delicious, the best veggie burger i have ever eaten. it was also the first time i had bbq-sauce, so maybe that's why it was so surprisingly good. :)

aside from veggie burgers, there are also veggie hot dogs. smart dogs are one of the best i've come across. beware the morningstar farms veg.dogs, they are much like human fingers... tofu on the grill works better if you freeze it for 24hrs (and then thaw it again) before you grill it, it keeps it more firm. quorn is delicious if you prefer (bbq) fake-chicken. veggie kabobs are also crucial.

a good tip for the burger not sticking to the grill (because it seems fake burgers are more inclined to do that) is to brush the grill with vegetable oil. not olive oil, though, that would probably catch fire.

For all you vegans out there, beware of Morningstar Farms products in general because a lot of them contain egg whites. Same with Quorn.
