Hey Canada, as of right now i am a United States Citizen living in New Jersey by nyc, and in January im Moving to Vancouver to attend film school. Im looking for anyone who could possibly tell me any MAJOR differences, and how lifestyle is out there. Anything helpful like how majority of people act, trends, crime rates, populations, places to visit, hot spots, i would really appreciate it. The admissions advisor who called me said in his first sentence "were all liberals up here" which made me but anyway. thanks in advance K...
i have heard vancouver is called "the hollywood north" or something along those lines... b.c crimerate is really low i believe in comparison 2 the states, less paranoid cops i would say.a lot of people are into wilderness tourism, stuff like that (theres lots of wilderness areas around vancouver) one place i wouldnt hang out is hastings street.... maybe when you get here you could post your comparisons!
Canada has way less crime than the States. There are harsher gun laws, etc. Vancouver is a cool city. Not as cool as Victoria of course Yeah BC bud is supposed to be the best on Earth. BC is the most beautiful place on Earth too if you ask me. I mean you've got the surfing in tofino, the hiking and climbing in the rockies, the canoeing/kayaking/swimming in the beautiful lakes and the ocean... the warm weather. It's definitely the best place on Earth to live. And you're going to film school? You'll have a blast with the scenery here. I just fall in love every time I take my camera out.
hey dude, welcome to vancouver! not that i'm there or anything, but.. yeah. vancouver is a beautiful city, quite well kept and clean. there's lots of natural parks and beaches, walking trails, etc, throughout the city, and LOTS of joggers. *beware* haha the city is surrounded for the most part by water, that'd be the pacific ocean, so there are a lot of beaches to check out. gastown, chinatown, robston street, grouse mountain, granville island, are all places you should check out when you get there; maybe sign up for a guided tour - there's plenty available and they'll be able to clue you in on local history at the same time. it's very multicultural and there's an enormous asian community - i believe that like 1/3 of the population is of asian descent actually. there's definitely going to be a lower crime rate than what you're used to, but still, lock up your bike & stuff cause there's baddies everywhere. the people are, for the most part, very friendly and open-minded, the younger people are very artsy and cultured, as long as you're friendly and decent you won't have trouble meeting some cool people. like the above posters said, there's a big hippy/pothead scene and it's definitely not rare to be walking down commercial drive or just some residential street and smell pot wafting out of someone's back yard. anyway, have a good trip & hope you enjoy your stay! btw, bring an umbrella and a raincoat; van has very mild weather but gets a ton of rain. check out this link: http://www.tourismvancouver.com/ for more info; there's a cool picture gallery at the bottom, too. have fun! peace, sophia
What's up with Hasting's Street? Is it just the bad part of town or what? Someone told me to stay away from there too when I come up.
East Hastings is where all the drug addicts who live on the streets are. They get you to 'try' their drugs and then have you under their little finger. Not cool. Yeah Vancouver's Asian population (I heard) is soon going to outnumber every other race. So I think it's more than one third.
Fuck everything you've heard about Hastings street. Its full of junkies yeah, but they don't push drugs on you. I feel safe walking there late at night as long as I don't look like I have a ton of crack or cash on me. Send me a message when you get to town, i'll show you around.
