I was thinking of painting my least favorite guitar, painting it for a psychedelic look. Is this a good idea, or should I just leave it alone?
hmm i say go for whatever you're feeling. a friend and i smashed his least favorite guitar though it was his only guitar and made a mural like collage for his wall out of the pieces. it was fun and i'll admit it looks great. ~tonya
Hm. How does one go about painting a guitar? What paint would you use, and what would you cover it with?
haha those are some of the problems I'm facing, syntax! It's balsa wood, so I have no idea what kind of paint to use, and I don't know what kind of shallack (sp?) to use.
I hope some of these pics give you some inspiration. I think altered guitars are really cool and hope to do one of my cheaper guitars up one day. decoupage https://webspace.utexas.edu/ajr1984/Alix/craftster/guitar.JPG http://pageproducer.arczip.com/alyssa61/guitar%201.jpg paint: http://www.craftster.org/pictures/data/500/14737laquieda-med.JPG http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v67/Linds3485/guitar.jpg you may want to read through this thread it may/may not help, but it's about painted electric guitars: http://www.ibreathemusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4516
Do it! I had a friend that painted lots of guitars for other people they were really cool! Do you have any idea what you want to do with it?
I want to put stuff like Grateful Dead dancing bears and maybe a couple of flowers (hehe), simple stuff, but I want it to look psychedelic too.
it'd look cool with a few designs and stickers on it but I absolutely love the natural wood on guitars.
give it a go. What you'll need is an electric guitar w/ bolt on neck. Separate the body, and unscrew the scratchplate, until you're left with a guitar body with the electrics inside. get a belt sander, and sand off the old finish, and then paint your new design on. You will want to varnish your guitar as well, to protect the paintwork. I'm not sure what varnish to use, but you'll want a fine varnish. then it's a case of putting it back together, and there you go - custom painted guitar! I'm contemplating buying a yamaha pacifica and giving it some funky artwork in addition to an electronic overhaul. (Adding effects pedals, built into the guitar with over-ride two way switches and the like.) I'll probably never do it, but i think it's a cool idea.
Hm... One could make a neat business painting guitars. Buy crappy old guitars, paint funky designs on them and sell them to people who judge guitars by their looks.
you can find a nice sounding kay or stella or harmony on ebay for less than 100 bux. i suggest painting on those instead of a nice guitar from your collection.
