Hi there everyone! I just wanted to ask how many of you out there have had to change the old-fashioned style of cloth baby diapers before with the diaper pins and rubber pants? I babysat last night for the next door neighbours and had to.

All four of my children were diapered with cotton diapers. I usually used pins and polyester or nylon pants, not rubber. (Don't think I have seen rubber diaper pants since the last 1960s.) I occasionally used Velcro or snap Wraps (which a lot of mamas and babies love) but I learned to change diapers, in the late 60s, with pins and pants and that is always what I used.

I didn't 'have to' I did it because I felt it was better for the enviroment and better for the baby's butt.

I wish that I could say that I do the right thing for the environment and use cloth diapers...but I don't. I tried and I feel that all that time spent cleaning the cloth diapers was just to time consuming. I have a hard enough time getting everything into one day as it is.

But I do believe that cloth is the way to go if you can do it with out going nuts

A diaper service is great. They pick up deliver and clean the diapers for you. I used these for all my kids.

My mother had to for me and my brother. That was the mid/late 80's when disposables were just pathetic. So it was the only option.

She used pins and rubber pants of course. Not sure if she was the crazy about it.

I plan to cloth diaper future offspring, for enviromental reasons mainly. Would definetly go the easiest route, no sense making things unnecessarily difficult.

I used the old pins and rubber pants when my daughter was a baby (11 years ago now). When I had my son two years ago I was thrilled at all the new diapers and covers, not to mention that many of the old washing beliefs were outdated. I used to stick my finger under the pinning so I wouldn't accidently stick the baby, but I stuck myself good a few times.

I actually used those kind with my oldest son (he's 5 years old now). When I went shopping for the cloth diapers, pins, and rubber pants, the saleswoman looked at me like I was insane and insisted that NOBODY did that anymore.

I used the square diapers with pins and plastic pants with my older children. Dakota is only in diapers at night now, but his diapers have velcro on them. They are hour glass shaped.

Cloth diapers have come a long way baby!

And to the mama who said that washing them was too time consuming....all you do is throw them in a dry pail and throw them in the wash every other day on hot! That is it!
You spend about $2000 on disposable diapers ALONE in the first 2 years (babies usually wear them until 3 now) and you can get enough cloth diapers to diaper your baby from birth to potty training for $300 or less. To me it is worth it for the environment AND for my pocketbook.

In response to the question though, no i have never used flats and pins with vinyl covers, and after using the "modern" cloth diapers...WHO WOULD!

I don't know if someone thought I said washing them was time consuming. In my area, and in my home, is is. I used a service, as it was actually cheaper than washing them myself.

We have a private well, (we live in a semi rural area) the water is extrememly hard, detergent doesn't work well, because of the hard water, and the age of our house, it takes MORE than an hour to fill our laundry tub. That is just the FIRST fill. In order to properly wash diapers, with the required rinses (as my kids were sensitive to any detergent residue) it would have taken me approx 3-4 hour PER load of diapers. I also have at least 3 loads of other laundry a day, and with diaper laundry and 4 kids, and a dh who changes clothes like a Barbie doll, and gets really dirty outside, I would do nothing but laundry if I had washed my own diapers.

I LOVE cloth, but in my circumstance I had to use a cloth diaper service. If you have nice, normal water, and decent water pressure and it doesn't take you 4 hours per load, washing them yourself seems fine.

    Thanx for posting this!
I've been debating over this for a while!
I've got a question for you mamas, though.
Ok, I would like to preferably use cloth. We're on a limited budget as it is, and regular daipers are retardedly expensive! However, contrary to what has been said in here, I had a sales lady tell me that she used both with her kids and it cost the same. I found that hard to believe......
One, I was wonering where you would get cloth daipers from? And how expensive are they so I know what to expect?
Also, we're going to be moving right away, and we don't own a washer and dryer just yet. We're trying to find a place that comes with them, but it's slim pickins. There's a few.......but not much. If we can't find one that comes with them, and until we'd be able to buy a couple, I'd have to use a laundrymat......are they even going to let me do them there!?
    Thanx for your answers!

If you google "cloth diapers," you will find tons of websites with all sorts of info. If you google "patterns for cloth diapers," you will get lots of websites with patterns. SOme are free. If you sew or know someone who does, they are easy to make.
As for laundering cloth diapers, if you rinse them out, they are not as gross as some people think. I always rinsed them out in the toilet.

    thanx!
I was wondering where I would rinse them out, and the toilet never popped into my head, lol, go figure.
i do sew, but i know that I need a certain type of cloth. My mom cloth-daipered us, so she should have some ideas, too.
I don't buy things over the net, but hopefully I can find a web site that will direct me to a store...hopefully one in canada.....
