I'm curious. I just finished talking with my friend who was told by her boss she has to get rid of her tattoo. She just got it too on her upper arm. It looks pretty cool. She's wondering whether to quit... And I was thinking what I would do if i were in the same situtation. I was planning on getting a tattoo on my upper arm as well, but I dont know if it will interfere with a future occupation or anything.
So yeah, have any of you ran into this problem?

I haven't, but mine's on my back so it's covered 99.9999% of the time. It's something I considered when trying to choose where to put my tat - somewhere that was easy to cover up without making myself overheat and get heatstroke during the summer from trying to cover it up. Upper arm shouldn't be hard to cover though... Tshirts, halfsleeved shirts of full-sleeve shirts. Also, I work at Subway - not hte highest standards ever for people who work there :S

Well, she can't very well get rid of it can she?

I have them on my legs because most jobs that will let you wear shorts won't mind tattoos.

So very non-discriminatory places tend to be the university systems, and a lot of social government jobs because they have to be non-discriminatory.

    It is something consider, though.

    Peace

I have a band of wildflowers wrapped around my ankle... I wear above-the-knee skirts from time to time... and my supervisor is exceedingly chill about it.

Sometimes I get weird looks from customers... but I work in a bank :)

I work at a dance studio as a dance instructor, so luckily, my boss encourages us to be who we are and be as creative as we want. My tattoos, piercings and hair are welcomed, even if the parents give me weird looks.

When I get a "real" job, my tattoos should be covered and I can always put a small stud in my nose or a clear nose stud...we will see...but right now, I'm encouraged to do what I feel comfortable with as far as my "look" goes.

i knew going in that i'd never want a "real" job; i'm pretty well tattooed, including a sleeve...
being self employed (and working a bit in our collective coffee shop) i'm hassle-free.

Some good concealer/foundation should cover it up well.

I've never heard of a place saying "get rid of it".. thats nuts. I was always told to keep them covered, and as long as I did there was never a problem. When I was bartending and reaching or bending for things, I wore a bandaid over my tats (like that looked better! Stupid boss!).

The only problem my restaurant had was with facial piercings... you had to take them out for your shift or wear a clear stud. I always had a hard time not feeling like a hipacrite (sp) telling people to take their facials out when I had tats and piercings too. I once had to send a girl home because she refused to remove her nose ring. That sucked.

I wouldn't work in any place where it piercings or tattoos aren't allowed only because it 'might offend' or something (even though I don't have any, I just wouldn't want to work for a place like that). Some people are offended by anyone who looks 'different' and I won't cater to their sensitivities.

That said, if there's a different reason for it, it's okay. I work in a history theme park and we wear authentic clothes; we're not supposed to show anything non-authentic. No modern jewelry, makeup, etc, no nail polish, that kinda thing. But we can be quite creative as long as it's period; I'm not the only barefooter, period jewelry is fine & encouraged, we have a couple people with dreads, and for tattoos I suppose it sorta depends on what they look like... one guy has a black-only tatoo, but I'm sure some obviously modern theme in an obvious place might be a problem (like some rock band logo or whatever).

I started my own small business to save myself from discrimination and drug tests. I am peirced, inked and can't ever do a clean drop. LoL, but if you're a good worker and you show people what you're made of usually they can look past it.

Although I have not yet started in the career that I will be in (midwifery) I do realise that when I am choosing to get a tattoo done I have to concider very carefully wear I can have it done where the scrubs will cover them up. Well, I don't really mind, as I am quite sure any woman in the throws of painful labour is not going to really feel any more relaxed if her midwife is covered in tattoos!!! :&

It would be so cool if people WERE just a tad more accepting of them and I could be free to 'display' them or at least not worry if they did show. :H But I'm not overly upset that the world just isn't quite there yet. In any other job, I might well have a problem being told to cover them up, but being a midwife (well, when I qualify....:D can't wait!!!) is quite a different thing and I don't really mind.

Well, *any*? :) I see your point as to most, but I would, just like I usually welcome seeing people in dreads or with piercings. I think a lot of folks posting here would.

Yes, I do also judge people on their appearance but then opposite from most. I try not to be biased, but well, when you first see a group of people & have to decide who to address right then and there, you gotta start somewhere; like when there's two folks working in a store you can't hardly interview them both before you decide whom to ask for assistance :). And when someone has an alternative look in any way, whether it's tats, piercings, bare feet, dreads or whatever, it's often a good bet they won't be shocked by *my* bare feet (and occasionally other stuff like bells in my hair or whatever). Also, in a store where everyone is wearing suits & ties, I can't help but worry it's my money (and the other customers' of course) buying those suits, and the shiny cars and all... but I don't hold on to my first impression if I get to talk to them and find out they aren't as uptight as they look.

what exactly is your friend's job, and is there a no tats/piercings clause in the dress code?
crappy franchise jobs often have this clause, but covering it up should suffice.
I'd not suggest taking it to court becauses the tat was after employment, and all "agreements" there.

In my former life, I knew lots of women who could not get hired in the " upscale gentlemen's" clubs if they had ANY tats (including under the T-back... now, they were supposed to leave those on, by law, so what did that matter?)
tats were pretty much a guarantee, in that culture, that'd you'd be swinging (dancing) or slinging (serving) in a less picky joint.
I was pulling a bill a day for a 6-hour shift, and I 'm not greedy about money, so I was fine working with a few tatted lassies.
The same upscale club told me I would HAVE to get contacts.
That bill a day? with my glasses. Appearantly some men loved 'em.

You say that as though you think I wound not! I would LOVE to wear all my peircings, have all of my tattoos visable, keep my hair in dreads and still be a midwife! I am simply saying that I 'accept' that I can not. I was NOT saying that I 'agree' as such that I shouldn't!

And, yes, I too would have approved hugely if my midwife had come in to my room to help me deliver my baby, with peicings in, if that is who she was. Heavely tattooed, if that is who she was. Wearing her hair dyed bright green, if that is who she was etc, etc, etc, rather than 'covering up' what makes her 'her' for the sake of the job. I would applaude that!!
But that is NOT how it goes sadly, I am just accepting that fact as it currently stands. I want this career more than anything so if I have to make small personal sacerifices, I AM well prepared to. THAT is all I was saying.
I think you may have missed my point or misread what I was trying to get at.

No, I understand that... it was only the 'any woman' part I commented on. Only pointing out *some* of us would actually like it better.

I work at an all natural and all organic grocery store. I'd say that over half of the people employed here have visible tattoos. Visible peircings are not much of a problem either - clothing too. The pay is great and so are the benefits. I love where I work.

    Love.

As would I! (as I had already said I would. Maybe you realise it maybe you don't I'm not sure, but you make it sound as though I wouldn't approve of that - and I WOULD!!! Very much so! I'm just being realistic in accepting that I can't appear at my job looking like that though. 'ACCEPTING' it NOT 'agreeing' with it)

But wow, such a tiny point to pick up on,....I typed 'any' when I ment to type 'most'....

All I was getting at is that, right or wrong, (and for the record, I vote 'wrong'...) fair or unfair, (again for the record, I vote 'unfair'...) 'ordinary' (couldn't think of a better word, sorry...) people generally don't feel so relaxed in the presance of anyone of of 'alternative looks' maybe some would, but 'generally' not. It's crap, I wish it wasn't so, but sadly it does seem to be. You said it youself, people WILL tend to judge based on apperences alone sometimes (including yourself, your words...) So I except that. In my career anyway. Any other job maybe I wouldn't be so cool about it but 1) I have always dreamed of being a midwife so hiding my tattoo's and taking out my piercings really doesn't seem such a big deal to me and 2) We are dealing with stressed out, in pain, tired, labouring women, I don't think it's that unfair that I should do my up most to help relax this woman, if she told me my hair in a being in a bun was bothering her, I'd put it in a ponytail. See my point? I just don't see the problem with doing what ever is required from me in a job such a midwifery.

Any other job, I can assure you I WOULD stand my ground and fight my corner in regaurds to my tat's and piercings. But being a Midwife is just a little different to say a working bar, or an office or a shop etc. (of which I have worked in all of those....) Outside of work is a different matter ALL TOGETHER too!! If people don't like/approve of them outside of work then, sorry to sound harsh but, tough shit.

But if tomorrow we were told, '...you can turn into work looking however you want to look, tattoo's, peircings, dreadlocks, whatever you want...' I WOULD of course LOVE that. I just accept it probably won't happen. Not in Midwifery.

shit i would have quit on the spot. a boss that tries telling me i can't be who i am, is no fuker with his head up his ass that i'd want to work for anyways. a tattoo is a part of your body and soul, just like your eyes, lips and nose.
