most gravy is "pan drippings" from meat with other liquids.

    Ponder this:
If the animal is already dead, what's the harm in eating it then?

Well, in that case where you are eating with your family, and they have a veggie option for you, i don't see the harm in having some of their gravy; mum's not going to start buying more meat (therefore killing more animals) just to make an extra portion of gravy. As long as the gravy is made properly (not from bisto ;-).

Yeah but if you don't want to eat meat for whatever reason, then you'd probably not want to ruin perfectly good food with meat products in whatever form. And after a while meat products start to be pretty gross.

    Anyway....

Bisto does an instant vegetarian gravy. It's explicitly labeled as such, and comes in green tubs. Might want to look out for that.
Though most of the time I just go without, it's not a huge sacrific.

because you pay for the meat, you are suppporting the company, causing mor animals to be killed. also, it's disrespectful. imagine eating your dead mom, just for pleasure.

some people are vegetarians for reasons other than the "meat is murder" bandwagon. i dont eat pigs cus theyre not kosher, i dont eat cows cus theyre doped up on hormones, i dont eat chicken because they live thier entire life in a diseases state. i could care less if something was dead or not.
that being said .. . . i forget how to make gravy, but yes it can be done.

That's a very amusing way of putting it...I've never heard that before. I will have to use it now (if that's alright with you, of course).

Also, there are a lot of little gravy powder packets that are free of meat/fat/lard/etc. you just have to read the labels to be sure.

there is a canned mushroom gravy without meat broth or geletin...its alright. i often use lipton's onion/mushroom soup mix too (there is directions to make gravy on the box). if you consume milk (although you could use milk aternative) i make a white sauce (or a sausage gravy without the sausage) with a seasoned flour called "Kentucky Kernal."

i'm a gravy fan as well as a soup fan and after i became vegetarian i have slowly learned how to put those things back into my diet.

also check natural foods section of local grocery store.

I know you wanted one where you only need to add whater... but ever considered making your own?

I doon't have a written reciepe, but this is about how it goes:

    1 small pot,
    piece of butter, or margarine
    some flour
    milk
    water
    salt

melt the butter, *mix the flower in, and cook, give the milk in, and water and a little bit of salt. add whater, or flour until the thickness is what you want it to be. be careful to not mix the flour directliy into the liquid, as it will become lumpy. disolve it in a little bit of water.

Ok, this is the basis. Now you can add stuff like spices (nutmeg, oregano, or what ever you like) or some chese. Or you start from frying some mushrooms and onions, and continue from *

Whether you agree or not, many veggies find the idea of consuming bits of dead animals to be distasteful. Also, if you lived in Nazi Germany, would you consider using a lampshade made from Jew-skin if someone gave you one? Y'know, on the grounds that they were dead already so what's the harm?

I make mine from scratch - though I've gotten rather addicted to mashed potatoes with a tiny "pat" of Earth Balance & plenty of green onions as a quicker alternative.

For white sauce, my recipe looks eerily similar to Kastenfrosch's.

For the occasional urge for 'taters 'n gravy, I'll make some up using vegan "tastes like beef" or mushroom flavored bouillon in place of drippings. My meatosaurus men like it just as much as real-beef gravy!

To eliminate lumps in your gravy, take your cornstarch or whatever you use as thickener & put it into a tiny cup with 3-4Tbsp. cold water. Whisk until smooth, and pour into pot of BOILING gravy, while whisking. No lumps :) The blender works well too - and is awesome for hiding any "oops" mistakes. But I prefer not to have to clean the whole blender, if I can avoid it... one small cup will fit in the dishwasher easier. ;)
    love,
    mom
