Cigarettes are so pointless. It's the socially accpetable addiction...so I say ban it from all public places.
Interesting a topic about smoking should be at the top of the forum when I first come here tonight. The news just did a report on smoking--not on the health effects, which we all know of, or the nasty smells, or anything like that...but about how lots of smoker's just throw cigrette butts on the ground--instead of in the trash can were they belong. I found this disgusting, when I realized just how many people do it--especially when there is a garbage can near and a person just throws it on the ground, or some other place cigrette butts don't belong. If people are going to smoke, I don't think they should do it in public places. Although some of them, it seems, don't have enough common since to realize that most people don't want to smell cigrettes or --worse yet--*smell* like cigrettes. I hate that when you're around smokers and the smell gets in your clothes and stuff. It's disgusting. The least they can do, if they are going to smoke, is to dispose of their cigrette butts in the apropriate place! DON'T LITTER! RAWR. I sent an email to the news station, telling them what an excellent story that was...:-0
well i think the majority of second hand smoke cases of cancer are the people who live or work with people smoking indoors. i think they should just find a new system of butt disposal. but yeh smoking outside sould be allowed whats a public place anyway? the street? a slab of concrete connected to the street?
What do you mean they should find new system of butt disposal? I think that is what trash cans are for.
That is probably true. Different areas may have more smokers than others. I live in upstate NY and because of winter we don’t have a lot of restaurants with a patio section so I do not know if the law prohibits patio smoking or not. I do not think there is anything wrong with having a smoking and nonsmoking section of a restaurant along with air purifiers. We inhale far more carcinogens walking down the street than we do from sitting in a restaurant. However, I do agree with people who say they don’t want to be exposed to smoke when they are eating. Most restaurants are more than willing to have a separate section for smokers and non smokers. Here is some thing that is a bit off topic but interesting: A gas station near where I live does not have a lotto machine. He tried to get one but, he could not because he does not sell cigarettes! The state does not want people to smoke yet, the state won’t allow lotto machines in gas stations that do not sell them.
I agree with it The "Saint Louis smokin ban" is hopefully going to go through by the middle of summer if all goes as planned. There are a lot of people protesting it though. but I called the phone numbers and told them I support it. I know the smokers are going to be pissed, but it's my right as an animal to breathe in AIR wherever I am.
wow, Dalamar, that is twisted. No smokes, no lotto? what's the state tax on cigs? what does lotto go to? In Colo, it is all Great Outdoors Colorado called GOCO, and finances parks and open space. Stoner Bill, public space is land owned by not and individual or corporation, supported by tax dollars, so it would depend if a store "owned" the sidewalk in front. However, the bill in Colorado is aimed at INDOOR air pollution, and "public use" areas, like convention centers operated by private or public boards would be in the ban. The US is a quilt of different layers of authority. this sort of issue is done on a community or state level, not federal. Not sure how Australia works.
The tax on cigarettes here almost doubles the price! The income from lotto goes to education. Well that “air” you are breathing right now is not all that pure to begin with. Everyone wants to beat up on smokers but, wait and see what happens when that law passes. It will effect your local economy. Businesses like restaurants and bars will be hurt. Prices will go up and/or employees will get laid off or will earn less money since most waiter/waitresses rely heavily on tips. Right now officials are considering loosening some of the restrictions on the smoking ban in my area!
well, there is part of your answer: half is tax? the gov't wants that $$$$. Heck, needs that $$$$$$$$$$$$$.
I would be interested to see a chart showing how many cigs you'd have to smoke to equal the amount of toxins emmited from buring one gallon of gas. I smoke and I don't drive and until someone shows me why this is an unfair comparasin I will continue to tell drivers who complain about cigarrette smoke to kiss my ass.
Most people have to use a car to get to work & places they can't get otherwise. Also cars/trucks are necessary in this world to move all kinds of stuff around -deliver the groceries we buy to the store, etc, etc. Sure, if you're talking to someone who likes to 'cruise' a lot, drives a gas-guzzling SUV while they never use more room than a compact would have, or drives over when visiting their friend 200 yrds down the block, then I agree with you, but many people use their car because they need it. Smoking may or may not be pleasurable, but isn't 'needed' on the same level as most car use.
What % of driving going at any given moment on any given day would you say is needed? (ie, no viable options).
Don't know for all car users, but most of my friends are pretty environment-conscious and don't take their cars when they don't have to. I personally don't drive at all. Yes, I know a lot of people, especially in the US, drive when not needed... but at least it's a lot higher % than 0, which is how often anyone *needs* to smoke
Amen! While no person need to smoke most people don’t "need" to drive either. Since we have things like public transportation, bicycles etc.. Anyway, that is besides the point. Even if every single smoker quit today, it would not make a single dent in the amount of carcinogens that we inhale on a daily basis.
It would sure as hell make me a lot happier. Not always, but sometimes it is just such a pain to hang out with smokers. I didn't want my maid of honor smoking at my wedding because I didn't want her to smell in her pretty dress, and god forbid she bring the smell inside. I know it's awful, and I really love her to death, but that's just how I wanted it. That smell...ugh...it's disgusting and it sticks to damn near everything. SO, she got SO uppity about the issue. I was like, "look it's only going to be for 2 hours TOPS, how hard is it going to be for you to go 2 hours without smoking?" Cause she does it all the time at work, but just because I actually asked that she not smoke while the wedding and reception were on, it was like I was asking her to .. god I don't know...eat shit or something. It was ridiculous. I just said "addicted much?!" And yeah she admitted it...but damn was it annoying. And I TRIED to make a no smoking rule in my car cause god it started to smell awful in there. But that went out the window since both my best friend (that maid of honor) and my husband smoke. I tell ya what...they don't whine very often...especially not him, but they both sure did a lot of whining when they needed their stupid nic fix. It's silly. They PLAN things around how often they'll get a cigarette break. It's just damn silly and annoying as hell to me. ETA: and I know how bad of an addiction it can be. I've smoked but never been addicted. But I can SEE how bad it is when my husband tries to quit. But that doesn't keep it from being damned annoying to a non-smoker.
I personally am happy about the idea of a ban on smoking. I once, before you weren't even allowed to smoke preflight, on a smoking section of a plane. War planes flew over and we were grounded for 2 hours. By the end of it my asthma had kicked in enough that I was on the verge of passing out, not even my inhaler was helping free me from the smoke entering my lungs.
Depends where you are. I went to college in Lamar, Colorado. The extend of our public transportation? The Greyhound bus coming through once or twice a day, and *one* taxi cab (not one company; one vehicle). Big cities have lots of public transport but small towns don't... and it wasn't really a good place to ride a bike either. Sure, I did (although I had a car for about half the time I lived there) but there were no bicycle tracks or nothing. You just had to ride along the highway where the big trucks roared past. I also tried riding a bicycle in Garland, Texas, a few times while my truck was in the shop and that was horrible, traffic was crazy and there just wasn't any room for bicycles at all. Not in the street, but definitely in indoor environments where there are a lot of smokers. If you can't hardly see the other end of the room for the smoke, you can't tell me it's no worse than when there wouldn't be anyone smoking.
