southern cali is a bit rough (born and raised there, and i am still here going to art school). although there IS venice beach, joshua tree, and burning man! i'd say, if you're giong to be spending time in california, check out northern cali and the big sur area.

    why california?

that state has gone to hell.

for some reason i think free spirits should try congregating in a wilder, freer place like montana or even alaska.

cause the weed grows free in the hills and it's cold in Alaska.

Thank you, Arachne! I've lived in Joshua Tree for the past five years and it's a gas. We just had the 3rd Annual JT Music Festival last week and it amazes me how it is growing so much every year. Check it out...

    http://www.JoshuaTreeMusicFestival.com/

Lots of musicians, writers, artists, moving here and there are lots of festivals and events all year round. Besides, the Joshua Tree National Park is nothing short of Mother Nature's Sculpture Garden, as I like to call it. From this past winter's arts quarterly...

    http://www.thesunrunner.com/Columns/Locopelli/locopelli.html

In interviewing Jesika von Rabbit from the band Gram Rabbit, she described the place well...
It’s a small community, but it’s a pretty unique and special one. There are a lot of artists and musicians out there, a lot of people who've been traveling a lot and found that place to kind of settle down, still continue their career but just get out of the city. It’s a really neat place. It’s very magical and there’s some really strong, weird, cosmic energy there, and I think that’s why a lot of people like us are drawn to it.
Yes, Arachne, Venice Beach is way cool (I've lived there, too, on the Ocean Front Walk, in the old Waldorf on Westminster, the one with the cottages on the roof.), and there is another great beach town in San Diego, called Ocean Beach, which still looks and acts like a 60's surfer/hippie beach town, with no chain stores, just cool shops, antique stores, and even the old "head shop" called "The Black" is still there on Newport Ave. There are so many vans and RVs lining the beach, that people live in, and that's even where Jewel got discovered by a record agent, while she was living in her van by the beach, then washing her face in public bathrooms, before going onstage at the local clubs.

So. Cal. is not rough, if you know the right places... it's still got it's big, luvin' arms out, ready to hug all the groovy freaks who come here.

As Jim said, "The west is the best. Get here, and we'll do the rest."

Do you remember people's food in solona beach?J.T.Where the streets have no name.Pappy's in Pietown is a cool place. You can catch Eric Burdon or Victoria Williams hanging out.Bill Medley got on stage a few weeks back.Pipes canyon is also cool.Take grimy gulch out to god love rd. for weekend drum circles. The owner has a full section surrounded by boulders with ponds and gardens.I don't get into that stuff but it is a neat area and he's good people.
