which band do you think has come up with the best lyrics ever? I like some of the stuff the Doors have done, it can be deep but then some of it is just Jim rambling. Pink Floyd has some really great lyrics also. Hmm, may have to come back and re-post!
There are way too many bands to list that I've heard that have had really kick ass lyrics. But to name a few: Led Zeppelin, although some were a bit simplistic in ways, they always fit things perfectly TooL, one of my all-time favorites, Maynard has a large vocabulary that he uses in his songs, (again, don't tell me that all these other bands use big words too, he does it the way I like it) and its as if he writes his music and lyrics at exactly the same time, as if they were meant to be one. The Doors and Pink Floyd both had really lyrics. Especially the Doors. If you ever get a chance (if you haven't already) listen to An American Prayer, an album that is mostly Jim Morrison doing his poetry, and some parts with music that the band mixed in. I think thats what it's called.
Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, The Presidents of the United States of America, later Beatles. Not sure who else.
My favorites as of lately have been Bob Dylan, Oasis, Kula Shaker, The Velvet Underground, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Band, and Frog Eyes. :H Frog Eyes = best songwriters around today.
I agree with you localhippy, Hendrix is really underrated as a song writer, he could write some beuaitful lyrics(Little Wing, Castles made of Sand for example) Also though, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, later Beatles, Bob Marley, Neil Young, Simon and Garfunkel, and for something more modern, HIM and the Dresden Dolls.
HIM's lyrics are wonderful. I think his image is a bit off though... The Dresden Dolls are QUITE wonderful!
I would pick Dylan, but he's not an actual band, now is he? Neither is Don Mclean, who could be elected for this price because he wrote "American Pie" Beatles are great in their lyrics. But I like Townshend's writing for the Who (yes, again). He could hide the true meaning of songs very cleverly. He managed to write a song about masturbation without having to deal with radio-censors. I love The Who. Don't ask me why, I just do.
As said above, Robert Hunter and John Perry BArlow, who are known as the Dead lyricists. I like Billy Nershi's lyrics (SCI) Singer songwriters HAVE to tell good stories, so I 'd list Don Conoscenti, Ellis Paul, and Nathan Moore as current faves.
Ohhh man....I love the Doors....and the Beatles....and Hendrix....and Pink Floyd....and yeahhh I just started listening to HIM...and i LOVE his lyrics...they're really amazing! But overall....I'd say the one who has me emotionally and the one who intrigues me the most and inspires me and leaves me wanting more and more and more is definitely The Doors...i love jim morrison....AHHHHHH
i guess everybody has their own personal favorites, but i was wondering...is there a band that is really known for their killer lyrics? like when u hear ac/dc or pink floyd, u know its their guitar sound? the eagles and the Band are both know for their harmonies but they have different vocal styles? i think i still have to stay w/ jim morrison and his lyrics. g-king, i think i will take ur advice an listen to An American Prayer.
The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is a great band who write great songs. They're Stones-esqe British Invasion revivalists from California.
yo soulrebel who is the girl in ur sig pic? I like bob in it, who is the greatest lyricist of all time. He could do anything in his songs.
Pink Floyd: And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death There is no pain, you are receding. A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon. You are only coming through in waves. Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’ I could go on forever...
Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic, Janis Joplin, Bob Marley, Led Zepplin, Ani DiFranco, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, John Lennon
Bright Eyes has been my favorite lyricist lately... the guy has great technique. Paul Westerburg(sp? Replacements songwriter) is utterly fantastic and pretty much inspired the "slacker" image that was so popular. Beefheart writes in a world his own... but nobody really beats Dylan, he forces you to pay attention to his words, and he caught on to that beat poetry style, which is so effect over music
