Grinnell in Iowa I'm sure would have a pretty awesome philosophy program. I don't really know of any in the midwest, but there's a really cool college called St. John's College that has campuses in Annapolis, MD and Santa, NM that is solely philosophy. All you do is read books and work with abstract thinking. Very, very cool idea.
Do I have to take a political science class for a philosophy major. Two things I loath is death and politics. I'm into religion, ethics, existence, psychology, culture, and aesthetics. I think all of the above that I've just listed are more important than politics.
You might have to take one or two... but you normally have lots of leeway on what you take. Look into some colleges that seem interesting to you and look at their requirements for philosophy majors. Keep in mind, however, that a good number of philosophy majors are aspiring lawyers, so some schools tend to cater toward that with philosophy based political science requirements, but not all. You could also look into majoring in sociology or psychology and minoring in philosophy if philosophy majors don't appeal to you. Sociology is the coolest major that you can do absolutely nothing with, but interesting nonetheless.
Well, I am going to do a journalism minor and philosophy as my major. I'm shooting for being a freelance writer, but I want my articles to be philosophical.
