these are very fine glass beads. they need to be uniform and sort of squarish. does anyone know where i can find some beads meant especially for peyote stitch? any local craft store carries cheap simple sead beads, but these are way too clumsy for a delicate stitch.
good luck, no one around here carries them~~not even michael's. I used to get them from this Native American lady who had a lil' hand craft store, but she closed it down so now I'm outta luck. Do a search for Fire Mountain though, they have a catalog that has every type of bead you can dream of and I think it's free, i used to get it.
The uniform ones are called delica's. They sell delica's at some big chain craft stores. Other than that fire mountain gems has a good selection. Do you have a local bead store? They should carry them.
i used to be able to find some with nice square ends, never did find any with consistent round ends though. cant find either now, but i'll ask around. my kids at the local shope might know. since they have a shop (the hempseed) specializing on beads and what not, i stopped researching and i trust them to do it. i should know if they exist by monday .. .. . oh wait, they are gone this weekend (WP at the FOX), i'll know eventually, just remind me (when im not drunk)
Sorry this is off topic but Wayfaring... you fell right into my hole!! MWAHAHAHAAAA im in your sig again!! *wooohooo*
peyote stitch is when you kinda weave beads together with a special beading needle. imagine having a ring that is made entirely out of small tiny seed beads put together to create a pattern. thas peyote stitch for you. lots of people put them in dreads, and i've seen em one the streets in beautiful bracelet form. by the way, thanks everyone for the fire mountain tip - i got all i needed there!
i make them with regular seed beads- is it worth searching out the square ones? esp if i'm thinkin about selling them?
i think so. i haven't found really nice seed beads though, just the bright plastic round ones. delica's are glass and you can buy em opague, transluscent, etc. they're just nice. i also found them to be quite cheap (of course shipping & handling was 8 bucks) except, moist - you're in washington, and so is fire mountain, so i doubt it'd cost you much at all which brings me to a question - do you think selling peyote stitches would be lucrative? it takes me about 2 hours to make a simple one; i can't imagine paying over $15 for one, and even that's a stretch. i always found it too time consuming to make satisfying money of peyote stitch. what do you think?
ya know my mom asked me the same thing. "isnt it like selling your time?". I just started and i love makin em- figuring out designs and stuff. And when one is done, its very satisfying... Im still debating whether I want to make a batch (maybe 15 or so) to sell at a couple shows ($10- $15?) I looked for them everywhere last summer and couldnt find a single person selling them. But yeah they do take a long time- they just look so awesome on dreads ya know!? I guess I havent really made a decision on this idea yet, I've thought about selling handmade shirts, which I can whip out faster and think might go better than the peyoteys. I dont know, its like a third of it is doing it for a lil money, a third for myself, and a third for the heads.
i do agree with that. i looked for peyote stitch for a long time before finally deciding to learn how to do it myself. they aren't really around...i also have fun makin em and love seeing how they come out, cause you just never know. now i give em away to nice people with nice locks. if you can make a bit of cash, great, i just can't imagine it'll be a lot!
