i guess what i want to know is pretty specific, but i'm not sure how to word it,so bear with me. i want to know if there is i way to find out if there are progressive areas in this country to live. my idea is this: what if a group of free thinking people could manage to populate an area, just a regular township and village in this country and manage to have a majority's affect in developing community. i'm thinking about how often times it seems intimidating to go up against a local township for fear that they don't think the same as you. i'm also think that there might be a lot a areas in this country that are depressed for lack of jobs ,whatever, in which people move away from rather than to it.i had the thought that if the right people moved in and if it had some sort of draw to bring in tourism or business, not just the lumber mill,or the pez dispenser factory or whatever, a nice community could come about in which the oddballs(us!) were view as the locals. in intentional communities, my conception, is that it is the other way around: the locals view us as oddballs. if anyone can relate to what i'm saying or can suggest a place to look or knows of a community that has good interaction with the surrounding community, please reply. my intention is not one of exclusion for the locals, just that i can find a place to live where i feel like i "am" one. like i'm accepted. peace, -k
Wasn't there some large movement relatively recently (within the last few years) to do this with Vermont?
Yeah, out of this World... Hebrews 11: 7-10; 13-16; 33. 34-40 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions. Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
Eureka Springs Arkansas looks like a pretty nice place to live at least on thier web site I've not been there so I can't say for sure. But I think thier website is at least worth looking at.
I found a site listing many communes online http://directory.ic.org/ IC stands for Interntional Communes. Most of these are in the US, but there are some listed in other countries. I'm sure these are not all, they are just all who wanted to be listed. I think if you are looking for a better way to live on this Earth, communal living will open your eyes to both the agony & the ecstasy of being a human being. I agree that multiple people can live together far more cheaply & with less energy expended than just one or two can, or just a selfish family unit. It's the ancient tried & true tribal route to survival & success. But in this maddening crowd I don't know why if anybody finds their Shangrila, they would want to open it up to tourism, but this was interesting. You can project yourself into the various circumstances & see if you would fit the mold. Click around the links & read all about each one, what the structure is like & what you must contribute to be a part or how you apply. They range from established communes that have been successful for decades, like Twin Oaks to Intentional (Wannabe) Communes with two members (Drummer & Lead Guitarist) who, when they grow up, want to be in charge of other people (watch out for those). There's a smattering of cults in there, I'd be almost certain & both secular & religious-based types & everything in between the two. Good luck on your journey!
