Anyone else find this sudden stream of suntan lotion commercials to be a little hokey? I mean. The sun has been there forever... People have worked in it forever so all a sudden it will kill us all of skin cancer? Come on! Geez....
lmao I see what you're syaing, but you gotta remember, people are morons who burned a hole in the ozone layer, so it's a lot more dangerous nowadays. But I rarely wear sunblock crap except at the beach. They tell you to wear it year-round even in cloudy weather becuz it's "better for your skin and protects you", but pff! Screw that idea!
YES, the ads are excessive. Of course all ads are in my opinion. But there are some things to think about: First off the ozone layer. Its getting thinner and that doesn't help. Also, the sun has always caused skin cancer, people just didn't know what it was or what caused it. Second, people are living longer. Cancer takes a long time to develop (usually). Instead of living 30, 40 or 50 years, we are living 60, 70 or 80 years. Third, some people are much more susceptible to the sun than others. I know my aunt has always had to have spots and stuff removed since she was young. If sunscreen had been more available when she was a kid (some 50 years ago), she might not be in the state she is now. However, the ads ARE excessive and it is kind of a racket. What pisses me off is all the people run to tanning beds (which are MORE dangerous than natural sunlight) but freak out to buy sunscreen thanks to these corporate ads trying to make a buck. Its the same thing with bugspray. Apparently we are all going to die of west nile, skin cancer, and whatever else they can make money off of.
I for one don't like to get sunburned. And, if I'm outside for more than 10 minutes, I will get burned. I have been blistered before, and it is no fun. I always wear spf 45 on my face, and if my kids go out even for a few minutes, I will sunscreen them. I don't watch tv so I don't know about all the ads, but I do know that the sun can be very dangerous if you are not careful. Our protective ozone has been so depleted over the years, it just isn't safe to be outside without it on.
Good points earthy. I hear frequent warnings coming from dermatology associations as well, so its not just the sunscreen manufacturers giving these warnings
Yeah, it sucks. My mother has skin cancer, and so did my grandmother. I have two brown spots on my chest that i think are turning a bit bad. I need to have them looked at. Whats worse about the ozone is not just our skin, but our crops are dying because of the depleating ozone layer. The plankton in the ocean are dying too, and once they dead, the whole sea is dead, and when the sea is dead, the planet is dead. It's really sad it is.
I agree w/most of the repys already made. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is very dangerous and due to ozone depletion it's more of a factor. Skin cancer is the most common cancer (at least in the US) and you don't think we should inform people? Too many people don't take it seriously, hopefully these ads will help inform people. There are plenty of people who still don't know much about skin cancer and its causes. I know 5 people who've had skin cancer removed. I just know there are tons of people who let their kids outside w/o sunscreen. It can be deadly, don't scoff at protection...
no wonder so many people in this world are depressed they wear to much damn sunscreen and dont get they vitamin D as for me i have never worn sunscreen
